While driving on a snowy slippery pavement this morning, I applied the brakes hard and my brake pedal began to pulsate, then I heard a clicking / grinding noise while the wheels turned, any ideas what this could be? |

Sounds like the ABS pump working........ If it is, it's normal |

Have you never had the ABS go off before? If you have, are you saying they sound different than normal? I guess I have lived on dirt roads my whole life that always carry a little snow during the winter, so I am used to the noise. |

I have never heard this noise when my brakes are locked up on dry pavement. The only time I hear it is when my brakes are on and the wheels are locked up skidding on snow or wet pavement. The brake pedal pulsates while hearing a clicking and grinding noise coming from underneath the engine compartment near the drivers side wheel. |

Ok, then you're saying that this is a normal sick sounding noise that we can live with? |

Yep, what they said. When the ABS is active on these critters, it sounds like the world is ending. Lots o' noise from under the hood and through the firewall. I think its because of where (and maybe how) the ABS pump is mounted. |

Thank you, I appreciate the responses. I am reassured that all is well with the funky braking system. Now onward to resolving the other issues. |

The ESP works great in these rigs too. You can literally jerk the wheel left or right, and the Jeep follows the path dead on with no tire squealing. I tried it after watching a Beamer on TV avoid obstacles with the ESP enabled, and it crashed and skidded with it disabled. I did my test with the wife in the passenger seat. LOL ![]() |

If it sounded good and felt good, you would do it all the time, right ![]() ![]() ![]() Early ABS cars like BMW not only sounded bad when the ABS went of. Your right foot got punched and beaten up when ever the ABS was activated, next time you were more careful when you braked on a slick surface. Now watch, some rap group will record the noise and make it part of their next album. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Other ABS vehicles I have driven seem much quieter and refined. |

My subaru was - and my Envoy is - the same. The noise has never been different. I had an on-coming car a few years ago (on hot dry pavement) think they were at a four way stop and they attempted to turn left in front of me. I slammed on the brakes and swerved and avoided a 50mph wreck without the car ever going out of control. The wheels never locked up and the Jeep seemed to just grip the road with two HARD correction turns though gravel and blacktop. Once my heart settled, I was very happy to be a Jeep owner. Oh and the brakes sounded like the car was grinding up small shards of metal and glass the entire time... They still work great though. GO ABS |

That noise and pedal feel is why ABS has been proven to cause more accidents then prevent, people get scared and let off the brake pedal and wham into a vehicle or curb and such. Plus you can stop faster without ABS then with, that is a proven fact also,ABS does not in anyway stop you sooner(it's impossible). |

If what you say is true about the ABS, it makes me wonder why DC installed the device on our Jeeps... |

It's being federally mandated,Jeep just started early due to the lack of driver ability now days.Just like TPMS is federally mandated now since people don't have enough common sense anymore to check there tires on a regular basis. |

I agree... TCS, EVC, ABS are systems for people that don't know proper vehicle control. My wife took a winter driving and accident avoidance course where she learned that stopping without the ABS on snow/ice was actually faster. It is because no matter what the programing is, a well trained and experienced right foot (and sometimes the left) will always be better in a passenger car. All those systems just train drivers into believing that driving with a ham for a fist and a brick for a foot is good. The systems are there because 99% of the drivers on the road have NO clue how to properly drive their cars. I would even get irritated at my Legnum VR4 when the AYC (active yaw control) would engage while trying to whip the wagon around a corner. Thankfully AYC didn't apply brakes, or decrease throttle... it just moved the power to non-slipping wheels.... unlike US market cars of today ![]() |

For some reason Fred Flintstone and the stopping mechanism of the Stonemobile comes to mind right now as a better way |

I,m all for on road safety, but ABS has caused me nothing but grief in an off road situation. There should be a switch to disable it while in 4WD. Due to liability issues I know this won't happen. |
