I want to do a complete fluid change on my CRD. Engine, coolant, trany, difs, transfer case, fuel filter and anything else that I may have forgot. Can someone tell me the preferred or required fluids/filters that I may need for all of this. I've had the CRD for about 1000 miles now and have done nothing to it yet. Thanks, Steve |

I use Amsoil and this makes it real easy to look up my vehicles http://www.amsoil.com/mygarage/vehiclelookup.aspx But if you like different brands, you can just translate the info. |

The coolant is supposed to be 100K to 150K HOAT, so you should be ok on that. If you're determined to do it, make sure you replace it with the correct kind of coolant. I believe Zerex makes some that is correct. Trans and Xfer case are both ATF +4. NAPA can get both the spin-on and pancake filter for the 545RFE tranny. I use Valvoline full synthetic ATF +4. Engine oil should be DIESEL RATED Synthetic 0W-40 or 5W-40. Capacity with an OEM-style replacement oil filter is 6.4 qts. Most popular oils here are Mobil 1 TurboDiesel Truck 5W-40 or Shell Rotella T Full synthetic (blue bottle) 5W-40. I strongly suggest either a WIX or Purolator Pure 1 oil filter. Fuel filters are also available at NAPA. Instructions for changing the filter are in the tech section, here: viewtopic.php?f=98&t=35702 Make sure you do not pour unfiltered diesel into the new filter. Also a cool idea is to take a Sharpie and write your mileage on the new filter when you change it. |

Is there anyway to FULLY drain the atf? I know after it is drained that there is probably still fluid in the TC. Also, which transfer case do we have. Looking on the amsoil site they list a NV231, NV241 and NV242 all taking different fluid quantities. |

Without disassembling the tranny, I don't think so. You could drop the pan and filters and let it drain overnight - that's probably the next best. Even a flush will leave some old fluid in it. I don't think the capacity of the xfer is all that important, you open the fill plug and put fluid in it up to that level. |

Basicly what others said. I'm letting my coolant go untill 100k or I have a hose issue which ever comes first. I use the wix/napa gold filters and fuel filter from Napa. my local napa don't keep the shell or mobil 1 oil in stock, I just get my Rotela T from wal-mart for $19.50 a gallon. Napa does give me a discount for being a AAA member so if you have that ask at Napa if yours offers that discount. I put unfiltered diesel in my filter when I changed but in hindsight I wouldn't do that. I would pour in Diesel clean if anything to not have to hand pump the filter full. I have not changed my trans, diff or axels I would like to in the summer. |

I've always been a Royal Purple fan and run it in everything I have. I've seen noticable improvements in milage and power especially in my other turbo car ,(made for faster spool). They claim it is good in gas and diesel engines but no where is the claim of being "diesel rated". So for the CRD engine oilo I'll probably go with AmsOil or Mobil 1 to be on the safe side but I'm still leaning toward R.P. for the ATF and differential lubes. |

I did the trans at about 50K miles. It wasn't a bad job, but was very messy. I had a lot of help from 2 local members (KJ 119 and mcinfantry) using mcinfantry's lift. The hardest part was getting all the RTV sealant off the pan. I strongly suggest using a full lift if you have access to one- it's nice to stand under the Jeep when you are working. |

Even Amsoil is not API or SAE certified as a motor oil. That's the main reason I have never bought in to using their lubricants. To each his own, though. |

Getting ready to change my tranny filters and fluid. Looks like my pan was put on using RTV as well, but new sump filter comes with gasket. Any preferences out there on using RTV to go back on instead of using supplied rubber gasket? I bought 5 qts of Castrol ATF+4 Fully Synthetic for the fluid. |

You will probably need more like 9 qts I let mine drain for a few hours and replaced almost nine qts. Next time I am going to put a drain bolt in the pan so it does not make such a mess just letting the fluid out. I have always used the gasket that comes with the filters from NAPA and never had a leak. I am at 126k now and no problems. |

According to the AmsOil website our transmissions take a grand total of 14.1 quarts of tranny fluid. Scroll down to capacities here: http://www.amsoil.com/mygarage/vehiclel ... +LIBERTY+5 I guess several quarts are trapped in the TC and through out the tranny and won't drain out. Thats bad becaust that is 5 quarts or so of dirty fluid that is and will remain in the trans. |

The only option then is to take it to a dealer or another reputable mechanic that has the flush machine capable of removing all the fluid from the trans. as much as I hate to say it, for that I would go to the dealer since all Chrysler vehicles (I think) use ATF+4 - no danger of cross-contamination with another type of ATF. I think when I drained mine it took about 5.5 quarts. I used the rubber gasket from the NAPA kit (don't forget the little rubber gasket that goes on the "spout" or the pancake filter, too) with a thin spread of RTV on both sides to hold it in place. |
