I have had clunking in my drive shaft now for a while. I have also had a clunck when shifting into reverse. I know that a number other CRD owners have also had the mysterious clunck in the drive shaft area and most have contributed the clunck to U joints in the drive shaft. I had those replaced but it did not fix the clunck.

About 20,000 miles ago I did start noticing a gear whine when turning right. Turns out it was wear in the spider gears in the rear diff. Got it changed out to an Eaton Detroit Truetrac limited slip and guess what? No more clunck in the drive shaft or what I thought was the drive shaft clunking.

I have 163,000 miles on my CRD. Probably more than most of you. Just wanted to let you know what solved my clunking issue and to keep your eyes and ears pealed for the spider gear wear issue.

163,000.. that makes me optimistic. I'm only half way to that point.

The Eaton Detroit Truetrac limited slip diff is for Chrysler 8.25 29 spline. You can get them from Rustys Offroad for about $460 or so. With shipping it was around $485.

163,000  How has your rig been all in all? Is there a highest CRD mileage thread?

Almost at 164,000 now. I am in sales and I do a ton of driving. I bought it with just shy of 10,000 miles. It will be 3 years ago at the end of May.

All in all it has been a good little truck.

Replaced CAC hoses at about 70K
Replaced torque convertor at about 70K
Installed provent about 10K before CAC hose blew
Replaced 2 glow plugs somewhere in the 150K range
Replaced the block heater plug 150K or so
Replaced rear diff at 163K
Need to replace FCV. Been bad for well over a year but hasn't impacted performance. Will replace it when I have the cash for the GDE tune. Getting tired of looking at the CEL.
Have MAF sensor unplugged.

I will probably change the CAC hoses out to Samco before to long. Still getting oil in intake side boost hose because of all the built up oil in intercooler prior to provent install.

I change my oil at 10-12K mile intervals. I have used several different oils Mobil 1 5W40 syn diesel, Rotella T 5W40 syn, and I now use Schaeffer Supreme 9000 5W40 full syn. It is good stuff and I will keep using it until the jeeps wheels fall off.

My goal is at least 300K before I even think of replaceing it.

Speaking with some independent older garage mechanics I'm told the Chrysler 854 differentials are a weak link. I've also got a 2000 XJ and with 150,000 miles and it's rear end clunks too :(
