I was out checking my oil and stuff this afternoon before the sun went down and opened my Provent for the 2nd time since I installed it. I pulled out the filter and looked down in to it to see that I have oil up the the botton of the cone shaped lower part. I have only had it in a few months... less and my 6000 mile oil change interval. is it normal to have it catch that much oil?

I tend to keep the oil filled near the MAX line, is that too much oil? and could that be causing the provent to collect so much?
My oil level is in the middle between add and max so I did not add anything this time.

I will need to find some dry pavement this weekend and drain it. I still can't believe it collects that much oil. That all would have went into my turbo, intercooler and intake.

Then into the engine where it would have been burned, then out the exhaust pipe. That is the cycle mine follows.

Mine gets at least 1 oz/ thousand miles - but at least 1/2 that is moisture from humidity - dryer climates don't get that.

And what does not get sucked into your engine settles out in your inter cooler, just like it did on my wife's TDI.

Serious question here - So that's really bad? Do you mean the fact that the hoses get eaten out, or do you mean the intercooler radiator thing fills with oil. If you mean the second, that's the first I've heard of it. Is this another reason to provent?

If your EGR is not disabled you will end up with a caked up mixture of oil and soot in your intake, as well the air horn that goes from the air cleaner box to turbo deteriorates where the CCV hose is plumbed in. If you have been running without a Provent you may want to remove it and check the underside. This is something that can go undetected for a long time, allowing unfiltered air to enter the engine.

whoa

I look at waht I started.

there is 3 ft of hose and its full I can see the oil at the very botton of the provent. so I will be draining it as soon as I can. My qusertion was is running the oil level at MAX causing it to put out so much? if so is more between add and max marks the goal to keep it at?

I would not run the oil level at the MAX line. It's too much; our dip sticks are not accurate in my opinion.

Next time, after an oil change, add 6.4 quarts and mark where that level is on the stick. Do not add more than that.

Personally, I do not add oil unless it is down by the MIN line. Too much oil is bad for this engine.

It is most likely the oil is cooling in the cold ambient, and the vapor is condensing inside of the can, instead of discharging out the hose.

Well, just think of me as you test specimen, I will let you all know when my CAC plugs up from the filtered engine oil. And don't forget, alot of the Jeeps were already run stock for over 100k, and I will buy Samco CAC hoses if they fail from oil, age, dry rot, movement of the engine, expansion and contraction, rubbing, etc.

I have owned 2 TDI's and I know what happens when "EGR fumes mixes with the oil". I had an Old Navy device on my 98 TDI, along with the epsilon device, etc. The Old Navy device helped, but it could not collect 100% of the oil.

Then, I got a 2002 TDI, and I put on the DieselGeek race pipe, and threw the EGR into the scrap pile. I let that take oil in through the CAC system, all air in there is filtered, so no way to gum any thing up, as long as you use synthetic oil, actually the oil does a good job of cleaning out any left over crap from the EGR. Yes oil is a solvent and it will clean the manifold eventually.

From now on I will not get into the Provent debate, until my Jeep fails due to lack of Provent. Then you will have a true spokesman and advocate of Provent.

Just wondering, does the Provent have any type of fail safe if cold oil thickens up in there, and raises the CC pressure, to bypass the filter and canister? I would hate to see you blow your engine seals? In the warm climate you would prolly be OK, but in the colder climate, I would watch it? The Old Navy device was pretty safe in the winter, but a remote device should be watched more closely.

The Provent does have a built in relief with low cracking pressure. A kinked hose going to the Provent is where some have gotten in trouble.

I have mixed emotions about the Provent. I ran one for quite a while. It does require attention and maintenance. It does violate the principle of Keep It Simple Stupid. I don't think the oil by itself is anywhere near the problem that oil mixed with EGR soot can be, but I don't think the oil is benign by itself either. The filtered, synthetic oil in my CRD left a coating in the hose to the intercooler. The coating had the consistency of half dried, oil based paint. It was very sticky, and I'm sure that which got into the intercooler is probably still there.

Your mileage may vary.

That is good to know it is fail safe. But on the other hand the Old Navy device was fool proof. With 4 vehicles, I don't need to be bothered with the extra maintenance issues.

I will definitely concur with the person who stated the dipstick was off. At first, I would put in oil to the max mark, and it made a mess and was blown into the provent or the manifold. If you accurately measure in 6.4 quarts, you will probably find it comes 1/2 way between the min and max marking, and this is all the oil you should put in. Any extra oil will be blown out of the oil vapor vent and will end up in your provent, or in your intake manifold, or on the road (if you have an EHM). If you check the oil level, you will find it quickly drops to the 6.4 mark, and after that, it will drop slowly (if it drops any).

I have only had this Jeep since August I guess I still have some things to learn about it. I used to always keep my cars up near the MAX on the stick thinking that having plenty of oil but not too much was best. now I will have to change my thinking and not add more when I check it to filler to the top mark. In the Middle is just perfect then

You are correct when I did change it the first time I believe that about 6.4 qt make in the middle but then somewhere along in the time in between I checked it and it was or seemed lower so I added to max.
