 Post subject: Fun Money Pit or Expensive Mistake?? - Liberty CRD

Love my 2006 CRD with Inmotion tune. Starting to get expensive and would appreciate other user experiences to help me think this through. I'm considering that it might be time to replace it. Hope this is posted in the right place.

55000 miles on it and I have the common severe trans shudder - started after the tune. I had to replace a passenger rear door window ($500) and now it's in for a radiator repair - probably $500 and will be a repair since the dealer has no new diesel Liberty radiators in the system. Also just found out that one of the interesting noises from the engine compartment is a vacuum pump and cylinder making noise and heating up. $450 to replace both although they still work.

I want to spend money on a lift and a full skid plate system but I'm now starting to add up what I have and will be spending on repairs and it's becoming real money. A local trans shop knows all about the TC problems and will replace the TC with a Precision unit (maybe Suncoast if I insisted), but they also insisted that if they did it, it would be a full rebuild with a shift kit for the sum of $2750. The trans I'm sure is still in good shape, but I understand their point. Brand new heavy duty and supposedly no more shudder.

My trans dipstick pops out like many experience on this vehicle and of course the fabric seats look like crap ($600+ for some nice leather seat covers). I haven't taken it seriously off road because of time commitments and the fact that I don't as of yet have the skid plate system. Also don't entirely trust it as it once just wouldn't start because a starter wire broke at the alternator and after the dealer found it, they mentioned the wiring harness looked like it had been overheating (posted this last fall). Mileage isn't great at about 20-22 mpg average. Haven't a clue how other CRDs approach the 30 mpg range.

So if any of you have the energy to comment, do you think that with the scarcity of parts and the lack of dealer support and trained mechanics for this vehicle, the more expensive maintenance costs and the the fact that diesel is usually significantly more expensive than gas, is the Liberty CRD really a unique enough vehicle to want to keep? Will it end up like the Mitsubishi or Isuzu diesel pickups of the early 80s or the Peugeot diesel cars? Will it cost those of us who are not auto mechanics a fortune to keep running?

My other runner is a 2007 G. Cherokee CRD with similar mileage as well as a 12 year old Dodge w/ cummins power, so I tend to like diesels. Maybe I should become a mechanic....

While dealerships are meh, these things you mention can easily be done by a novice mechanic with a simple tool kit. There is NO reason to pay these outlandish prices, epically when there are people out there willing to help you out. I do this with friends, family, and friends of both here in MN. You provide the parts and the beer, and I will teach you how to do your own work. I am sure there are others in the world that are willing to do the same. http://www.mileoneparts.com has the radiator you need for a list price of $319.00. I am sure you can find cheaper, if you find someone who can provide the part number. It should take no more than a couple hours with the FSM to get the radiator swapped out. As for the vac pump, if it is the little thingy behind the air-box... that will be about 30min with some simple tools to change on your own.

This is a forum for us all to help each other, don't feel ashamed about not knowing much about working on your Jeep... we ALL had to start somewhere! Ask your simple questions, and maybe you can be the guy to post up the "How-To" when you are finished!

If you are getting shudder, and are still under warranty GET IT FIXED! Chrysler has changed the TC to the Euro model finally, which means no more shudder. There are rumors that this unit is even better than the Suncoast... AND CHEAPER! Find a friend that has done an engine swap, trans swap, or TC swap on darn near any RWD/4WD vehicle on the road. With their help changing out your TC should be no issue at all. Again, DL a copy of the FSM, and follow it step by step... it's what your dealer tech is going to do anyway. As for skids... frequent your local junk yards, you will be amazed at how cheap you can get a set of factory skids will be! If that fails... retired road-signs make VERY nice skids.. ask my old XJ ;) You can find them at local scrap yards, or by talking to the guys in the city/county that change them out.

I don't have an issue with the trans dip-stick popping out, I can only imagine this may be caused by too much fluid? The fabric seats stain... BEYOND easy. I don't know how it happens, but it does. If you plan on wheeling it, I would avoid leather. It may look nice, but it doesn't hold you for crap, and you never want to get it muddy, dirty, wet, or drop anything on it. Nothing worse than trying to climb a rock with your booty slipping around in the seat. Plus in the winter they are COLD! The starter wire sounds like someone was dicking around with the alternator, and eventually broke the wire. Just look at the parts and if they seem worn, snap a pic and post it up. Someone here will help you out.

Lastly,

NO VEHICLE on the road will be free from problems. This is because they are machines that were never designed to last forever. Take good care of them, and they will take good care of you. If you feel that you may be overwhelmed, then by all means sell the thing. But if you have other vehicles to drive, and this one is your "toy" then have some fun. You can learn a TON by fiddling with the cheap Jeep in the fleet!

The secret to my success for 92K miles including severe off-roading of near perfect performance is not to mess with it (tunes, circuits), keep up with maintenance and put only the fuel the manufacturer says is compatible.

Rgill,

Don't get discouraged, all you need is a little time to get her patched up. Don’t let the tranny shop take you for a ride, you don’t need a full rebuild.

600 dollars in parts and 600 in labor is what it cost me in November. Do some home work and find a reputable shop that will only swap out the TC and Pump.

You wont believe how much better she performs, how quiet she becomes and how the shakes and rattles disappear.

The little beast has become a respectable power house while idleing and you no longer need to put her in neutral when stopped at a light to settle her down.

I suggest you go with the Euro Tc and Pump, it meshes perfectly. It's a beautiful thing.

Is the Imotion tune a mileage tune or a power tune? Any ways, if you are going to be Bombing like that you should know how to do it your self, or have deep pockets.

Maintenance on the GC CRD ihas been less. I had to have the transmission module reprogrammed since the shifting got a little screwy. Something else that I can't remember just now. No breakdowns ever.

Maintenance costs are high if you use the dealer. The MB engine requires more time to leave on a lift so the oil drains out properly. Dealer charges are about $75 more than a gas, as everyone with a diesel engine knows. Same synthetic oil required, etc.

The GC engine runs at higher rpms than the Liberty engine I assume because of the gearing. Highest mileage with this vehicle has been about 22 on the highway. As low as 18.5 or so in hard city. On average - 20.5 mpg.

Good vehicle actually. Excellent power.

But I digress from the Liberty comments...... sorry

I never see your MPG now in the winter on winter fuel unless I drive mostly highway. 20 is not that bad. mine is mostly stock and I can get 20-21 in the city in the summer using 2wd only. this week its been horrable with all the snow. so I have lot of idleing. and tons of driving in full time 4 wheel. My EVIC was repoerting something like 15.5 last I looked.... that was for all city driving mostly in full time 4 wheel on winter blend fuels.

I tend to have a heavy foot on clear roads too.

I know my mileage sucks but I don't think its so bad. The thing carries me in safety and comfort in this nasty winter weather and I am pleased with that.

Most likely revs high because it is a V configuration engine. Inline diesel engines put out more torque at lower RPMs compared to a V engine. It was kind of sad to see MB change the 5 cylinder inline engine on the Sprinter to a V6. They lost some of the MPG in the process.

help!! as mentioned above, i have my liberty at the dealer for a radiator leak. they removed it and found it to be broken. they indicated that there is no crd liberty radiator in the system. they took it to a radiator shop who said it was not repairable.

so i sit with this thing not usable. one post mentioned a million parts and i have a call into them. otherwise, anyone know where i might get a replacement???

The 2006 radiator is part number 5174154AB and lists for $212.22 on moparpartsamerica.com. You may have to call for availability, but nothing was showing that it could not be ordered. Good Luck

Thanks Greendiesel, Rich and others for the comments. I'll try on Monday to find a radiator. I know the service guy at this current dealer as he used to work for the dealership I bought the CRD from (said dealership - a good company - was a victim of Chrysler's unfair rape of it's dealer networks). I'm pretty sure he's telling me straight that his parts department indicated the radiator was unavailable and/or on "backorder". So it's be interesting to see if it's available through a separate parts network.

My CRD started to overheat about a year ago on steep uphill inclines after I did the InMotion tune, although I don't think it was related necessarily. I was beginning to think that the torque converter shudder was adding heat to the system and helping to heat the engine radiator, but maybe the radiator itself was defective and had been losing pressure (without losing much water).

Regret not buying the extended warranty now. Didn't with my GC CRD either and with these unsupported "specialty" vehicles, it's probably better to cover yourself any way you can.

Thanks for the leads. I found a used on and will try that. (Thank you Rich for the wrecking yard leads.) In addition, after warning me it might take 4 to 5 months to get a radiator from the Chrysler inventory, if it actually is available, the dealership says there might be a new one coming in a couple weeks. $340+- price.

So I may be able to continue using this peculiar vehicle after all. My backup plan was to modify the from end so I could install some other radiator - preferably all metal. I was thinking of modifying the front end to look like a Peterbuilt long nose.

Hopefully, all will end well. Now I can go back to worrying about the other little quirks in this vehicle.
