I just got a letter in the mail today saying that since I'm the second owner, I have to transfer the warranty at a fee of $150 into my name or I will have no warranty coverage. I'm at 76,000 miles...so I have no bumper to bumper OR powertrain warranty eligibility anyway. So it's no big deal to me.

However....what caught my eye was the end of the letter where it said: "Any other warranty coverages, including applicable emissions and noise warranties required by law, and 5 year/100,000 mile coverage of a diesel engine, continue unaffected."

To me that sounds like my engine is still under warranty for 24,000 miles and I don't have to do a thing. Right?

Is it from Mopar/Jeep?
Sounds like a scam, in this economy people are looking for a quick buck. Check with BBB.
No way as a second owner are you obligated to do anything besides register vehicle in your state and any applicable emissions test or safety check.

I found some places on the internet when researching the CRD before I bought it that 05 & 06 had a 100K diesel engine warranty but when the dealer tried to sell me a warrany I asked about the engine warranty and they claimed to know nothing about it.

The transfer fee is for the Chrysler 7/70 warranty... But you are beyond that, so no point. Even if you weren't... Paying that money guarantees you NOTHING if the corporate computer decides to remove your coverage, like happened to me.

But a 100k engine warranty? I'd want something in writing about that, and good luck getting it. Members here can't even get a straight answer OR anything written about what constitutes the "powertrain" for the powertrain warranty.

It really is all about "give us your money now, for vague promises and good feelings... And a sharp kick to the crotch when your vehicle breaks."

in 05 there was some advertisement or paper somewhere with a line about 100,000 engine warranty - but I don't think that was intentional - it wasn't in the warranty information and I don't think it would be honored by a dealership.

I thought it was lame of DC to just give the 2005's the 7-70 warranty. My Geico mechnical breakdown warranty runs to 7 years, or 90K miles. It is $250 deductible though, but they sprung for the balance of the upper control arm/ball joint repair.

if you though 7-70 was bad - the 06's got 3-36

Yes, this letter was directly from Chrysler...and they even had my information correct. So the letter is legit. I was just trying to determine the part about whether I need to pay a transfer fee to keep the 100,000 mile diesel warranty intact or not (sounds like I don't from the letter).

Also, the owner's manual I had with my first CRD (I bought new) DID say the diesel engine had a 100K warranty. I remember that now.

But that wasn't a 2006 was it?

The way it was explained to me, and I confirmed this with a couple of different dealers.

2005 3yr/36k(any owners) bumper to bumper: 7yr/70k power train(transferable for fee to second owner only).
2006 3yr/36k(any owners) bumper to bumper: 7yr/100k power train(original owner ONLY).

Mine is a 2005 purchased with 23k miles on it. I am the second owner and was able to transfer the warranty into my name for either 75.00 or 150.00.

The 7/70 powertrain warranty for the 2006 is inaccurate. There is none. The only exception is if the original 2006 owner took delivery after July 26, 2007. Then, it is covered by a lifetime powertrain warranty. But, even then, it only covers GASSERS and not the CRD.

Both of my CRDs were '05 models. It was commonly known that the '06s only got 3/36 and that's why a lot of people stayed away from them. Well, that and ESP.

Hey, ESP has saved me many a times. Being stupid on icy roads mostly. The ERM part of it kept me out of a river once. Unknown ice on a curve...river on the left.

hey I like mine no Issues with the esp and other traction control goodies. they do take charge if I try to pull out on a wet road in 2 wheel too fast, I have seen the stability thing light once when I tried to make a turn too fast not long after I got it. Since then I have gotten used to how it handles and none of that stuff bothers me much... For of road driving once you are in 4 low all that stuff is automaticly disabled untill you go back to 2WD, part-time or full time.

When we purchased our 2006 CRD as second owner from a Jeep dealer we received a 7/70 powertrain warranty.

It wasn't from the factory. It must have been something the dealer tached on and in the end, you paid extra for.

Yes, the 100k diesel warranty is in the book for the 2005 model. Actually, the manuals offer conflicting info where in one place it said 7yr, 70k, and in another it says 100k. My salesman when I bought it new said 100k.

I have actually found this info on other sites as well like Edmonds. They say I have a lifetime warranty. But to put all this to rest, the 2005 does have a 7/70 PT warranty and is available to the second owner if they pay to transfer it. The 2006 is 3/36

Yeah, I also have an 08 Grand Cherokee that should be covered by the lifetime powertrain warranty. 'Cept it's got the good engine.

Apparently, DC thought it would be too expensive to keep it with the 7/70. Mine is almost there, and NO issues at all. Bunch of chicken rats if you ask me. They kind of used the old bait and switch with the CRD warranty.
