Do I have them? I just got new treads and the tire guy put in new stems so I asume I didn't have the stem kind. Where would they be if I have them? On a strap like my Stang? Part of the ABS system? No idiot light showing up. |

all 2006 have them, how do you know you got new stems? They are silver not rubber and don't bend. If yo paid $50+ each for the new stems then yes you got new stems, otherwise.... |

Well, I saw the tire guy cut the old stems off from inside the wheel and the black rubber ones fell to the floor. UPDATE***** I don't have them and never did. The valve stems have always been rubber. I went and checked the full size spare with it's original rubber stem and Badyear tire. I wonder if this was something the stealership was supposed to put on in his "prep" thing or not. In the repair manual, it states...."on vehicle equiped with TPMS" which leaves room to think that not all had them. |

I have metal stems and they don't bend. they should have silver plastic caps. As far as I know they are not very service able. I think all you can do with them is change the valve core or replace the whole unit. mine has the TPMS on all tires. if there is an issue the amber light in the cluster will light and if you have evic that will display a message like "low tire preasure" or "check tps system" you will also hear a ding sound after you start the engine. When I got new tires they did nothing with them. your jeep sould locate each tire on its own too. which is much better than my friends 2008 Silverado. On the chevy when you rotate the tires you have to go through this big long thing where you turn the key so many times then lower the air in one tire till the horn honks then stand on ur head and clap 3 times while winking ur left eye then move on to the next untill it locates 3 of the 4. |

Well, I went through some of the search posts and apparently they were not in all KJ's. I saw one post from a fellow sport owner and he didn't have any. Maybe Limiteds got them and us cheapo sports were SOL. Looks like EVIC is the clue here. |

It's ok if I don't. Maybe they were an option.....who knows. It is interesting though, to find out there are so many folks who aren't aware that some do and some don't have them. I thought it was just me. ![]() |

Remember Ford, and the Firestone Blowout 500s that they installed, then under-pressured? We ALL are supposed to have TPMS sensors and at least an idiot light in the dash b/c of that... And ALL cars are supposed to have them, starting with like the 2011 model year. Yet another piece of expensive gear designed to protect the dumbest among us, deny Darwin and the people seeking Darwin Awards. In your case, the previous owner probably didn't know what they were, and had them replaced with the generic standard valves. OR, he had an error that he didn't want to spend $100+ to fix, b/c an idiot light won't tell you WHICH TIRE has the problem... Or if you are the only owner of this CRD... Your last tire shop guy cost you a lot of money by just discarding those sensors. The valve core is designed to be replaced, the stem is NOT, unless the sensor is being replaced. |

I have an 06 Sport with the same build date, no TPMS on mine (thankfully). I think this was standard on Limiteds, though. I'd be interested to see if Sir Sam could add that to his graphical skills, a breakdown of installed options between the 2 model years, because I have an EVIC. It's strange to hear of Limiteds without that - I love mine. |

Interesting. I have a Limited, but have cloth seats (driver's power), no sunroof, and I had to install the EVIC myself - Not factory. But I DO have the factory TPMS... And all this is on an 05. Do you have aluminum or steel wheels? That is the only reason to NOT have them that I can think of. |

TPMS was not mandatory till '08-'09 model years, you could either have them or not since '04 as it was part of some option package and never standard on any KJ. |

The previous owner was DC. I watch my work being done, and nothing like ripping out the TPMS jumped out at me. I think they are mainly for idiot soccer mom types that don't check their tire pressure for like 3 years in a row then get all law suit happy when a tire blows. Folks like us that are involved in our rigs shouldn't have a worry. Unless you can't tell the difference when a tire is going down while on the road. |

Not all TPMS systems use the alloy stems,'08+ GM uses a rubber valve stem equipped TPMS(as does newer Subaru's) and Ford uses a traditional rubber valve stem with the TPMS sensor banded to the rim itself. |

There really seems to be absolutely no standardization across the model years and trim levels. The only absolutes seem to be that 06's have ETC and no limited-slips, while 05's did NOT have ETC and some had limited-slip (Trak-Lok); that Limited's have body-colored flares and bumpers and chrome trim, and power driver's seats - whether cloth or leather. |

I think the TPM was mandated for the 2007 model year. That is to save fuel because of so many people driving around with half inflated tires. Safety is a smoke screen to sell the idea to all of us who maintains our vehicles. |

I've got a Limited with leather and evic but no TPMS. I will still get an idiot light if a tire is low but I think it's from the wheel speed sensor noticing the difference. |

No, that IS the TPMS system. The wheel speed sensors are only tapped for the ABS, nothing more. TJKJ, I have to disagree about what model years they were made mandatory. First was the SUV category, and I'm fairly certain it was the 05 model year, 06 almost absolutely. My family has two Mercury Mariner hybrids, both 06 model year, and they have the sensors. Safety? Fuel economy? HAH!!!!! The REAL reason we are all saddled with these things and that they DON'T give any useful info (like WHICH WHEEL is failing or low) is because Ford lost the lawsuit in like 2002... And the industry was required to install these things to alert the driver that there was a problem - The driver was too brain-dead to put down the latte and recognize that the vehicle's handling resembled wallowing in a mud puddle on the highway. Yes, it sounds like safety might be the reason... But here is the catch that proves it isn't: The idiot light is there to alert the driver to DO SOMETHING (could be anything, choose your own adventure) and thereby ABSOLVE the vehicle manufacturer OF LIABILITY IN THE SITUATION. Ford was found guilty of putting sub-standard tires (not LT rated for the weight of the vehicle, not enough safety margin) onto the Explorers... And then compounding the problem by setting the factory pressure (on the almighty door sticker) at the barest-minimum level to be considered "safe" in "normal" conditions. Unfortunately, hot highways and extended (1 hour+) highway-speed driving made the tires flex excessively, wearing out the glue liners. Add in the problem of tires not being checked religiously by the owner and maintaining that barest-minimum pressure... And you have the disasters that happened. Safety might have been part of the ruling, but the real argument by Ford was (somewhat correctly) that it is the owner's responsibility to check the tire pressures. That is what the TPMS is designed to prod you into doing - It says "I have a problem!" without telling you what... So you have to become a detective and CHECK THINGS. The biggest flaw in the system is that the manufacturers are STILL putting barely-capable tires onto heavy vehicles, and then under-pressuring them with the factory ratings to deliver that "car-like ride" out of a vehicle that was originally a TRUCK. Want a car-like ride? Buy a CAR! ![]() But the driving public really should be given transportation ala "Minority Report" where the vehicles drive themselves to the destinations... So that the 90% of the sheeple that are too dense to check their own tire pressures OR put down the latte and drive aren't endangering the ones of us that know how to do these things. Its 2010... Weren't we promised self-driving cars by now, in everything sci-fi for the last 60 years? |

But ABS IS part of the ESP on an 06. We are hearing more and more KJ owners coming out of the non-TPMS closet. I can only speculate that they were NOT madatory. On here, they are listed as an OPTION and cost $68. Wasn't even available on a Sport. http://consumerguideauto.howstuffworks. ... erty-8.htm |
