So, this has happened to me twice in the past week (but never before that I can remember). I started the vehicle cold in the am (temps in the high 30s- low 40s and vehicle parked outside and level), waited a few seconds for the transmission pressure to build up, put it in reverse, and let off the brake. I have a slight downhill in the driveway, so this is usually plenty to get me going as fast as I need to go. WELL, after a few feet, the engine revs and I accelerate in reverse (without my foot on the pedal). Both times I caught it with my brake foot. Once the engine stalled out completely and the second time, the brake stopped the vehicle but it continued to rev a little (as if I were feathering the throttle in an old carb vehicle) until I put it in park.

Each time this happened, it's only done it once (granted, I don't typically drive in reverse anymore until the next time I start the car). It seems really dangerous, though, so I'm wondering it anyone else has had or heard of the behavior.

Is there a Toyota in the garage with your CRD? Maybe it caught something.

Electronic throttle controls are the devil.

1 Where's the surging?
2 What kind of rpms are we talking about here? 800 - 1000? if so seems reasonable considering at idle the crd is making ok power. Add a grade and your going to get moving, and reverse is a fairly low gear ratio.

EDIT: Check your atf level, and make sure to do it properly (level ground, engine running etc), I suggest when cold, i find it easier.

I've noticed that when it was cold out the tranny would act a little funny when you put it in reverse right away ( i.e. not go into gear right away, make gear noise, engine surge)

Someone else here suggested to start the engine, hold the brake and put it into reverse (or drive) for about 30 seconds before moving. I believe this was to allow the pressure to build up fluid in the torque converter due to a fluid drain back issue? We do this simple procedure and now we have no issues with the tranny or surging. Our torque converter and pump were replaced at about 20K miles during F37. Luckily the PCM F37 programming didn't stick. Now at 69K miles.

Wju settle for a tranny that doesn't operate correctly. You shouldn't have to sit there and wait for 30 seconds while pressure builds up. Get the line replaced.

What line would you be refering to... line to the cooler or something internal to the tranny?
