He has a CRD 2.8 Town and Country and posted the following on a minivan forum Hi Had an oil and filter change done at a local garage a month ago. About a week ago I noticed a slight oil leak from the right (timing belt) side of the engine. It only seems to leak when the engine is running. Its not a big leak....1 or 2 drops under it when i park it after a long run. Checked oil level and to my horror found it had been overfilled by the garage significantly......... Above the max mark by 1/4 inch. So i have some questions! 1. Could the leak be from the front crankshaft oil seal or camshaft oil seal? 2. Could this have been caused by overpressure due to the oil overfill? 3. If it is the crankshaft oilseal (as I suspect) is it likely to contaminate the timing belt? 4. When the oil level is drained to its correct level is the leak likely to stop? I can't tell you how furious I am that a garage managed to overfill during an oil change.....This level of ineptitude is staggering. Thanks! |

yes, yes, IDK, maybe. I think he may be overfilled by 8 to 12 ounces. Not huge, but still over. My biggest concern would be it dumping into the intercooler. He needs to drain it back to 1/4 inch under full and see what happens. Stranger things have happened. |

The excess oil will seek the path of least resistance. In this case, that would be (hopefully) the Crank Case Vent, on top of the engine. In our Jeeps it is about the size of a hockey puck on the left rear of the engine if you are facing it with the hood open. Not sure what the orientation of the CCV would be in your buddy's minivan. Here is a link with a good picture and explanation of the CCV in the Jeep: viewtopic.php?f=98&t=22703 Tell your buddy once he finds the CCV puck, to look closely around it for excess oil, as that is where the pressure is most likely to go. I wouldn't think it is the front main seal, or there would be more than a few drops after a long run. Hope this helps, let us know what he finds - and pics would be helpful too. |

Isn't it a sealed system though? |

In what way? The puck itself acts as a pressure regulator to allow excess internal engine pressure to bleed out so that your seals don't get blown. In the US it is connected to the intake, so internal gases released can be combusted, so I guess in that way it is sealed? |

Underfilled is as bad as overfilled. Keep it in the range on the dipstick. 2.8 minivan huh? Auto or manual? I used to work on minivans and I've always liked those, they turn heads here in the states, especially the right hand drive ones. Wish I could take one home permanently. You get real weird looks filling them up at truck stops. |
