Post subject:  who has replaced their front drive shaft?

I posted before that I have a hole in my rear boot on the front drive shaft. Dealer wants $539 out the door. My question is whether or not anyone has replaced their shaft on their own. It doesn't look too hard. I see 5 or 6 bolts around each yoke. Does the new shaft fit right in with out much trouble? Each end of the drive shaft seems to have built in joints with a boot already over each side. I'm assuming there is grease in them and that it is a closed unit.It doesn't even look like I will need to remove the skid plate.

Am I wrong?

After removing the bolts on both the front and rear CV joint you may need to pry the joints loose with a screwdriver and hammer on the back edges. It might be easier to remove assembly by sliding out the front CV first and then the rear...the memory is fading. good luck.

The shaft would have to come pre-balanced right?

When I take the shaft off, do I need to worry about orientation staying the same?

It should have some sort of balancing done. We always use a paint pen to mark the driveshaft prior to removing so we do not mess up the balance. Hard to do that with a new unit. If there are no instructions or markings on it, you will just need to install and test for effect. Is there any information in the service manual?
