kapalczynski - I was of the same thinking, but finally got off my butt and fixed and a viola! Temp gauge just under 1/2 now!

I'll dig it out of the trash and take a couple of pictures of it.

I'll buy it from you for $10, not kidding. I am curious to find a similar one for cheaper if it is available as I used to work in the parts business and thermostats are all really similar usually. It would give me something to compare to w/o disassembling my jeep.

I get the unexplained drop in fuel economy, but did anything else suggest that the t-stat was not operating as it should? I don't think my temp guage has EVER shown above 50% and after the GDE tune, it shows a little lower. Did you pull any readings off the coolant temp of the ODBII or the like? I'm always up for a performance/economy increase, but I don't know if I even have anything wrong

My gauge was always just under 3/8th mark and reading the GDE post regarding where the needle should be I determined by tstat to be bad because when I first got the GDE tune (~June '09) it was just under the 1/2 way mark. After replacing the tstat its back to just under the 1/2 mark. Additionally it was taking it forever to get warmed up.

Do you have a part number? Is it a kit with the new housing and gasket?

So for the last few months my temp gauge won't go above the 3/8s mark. So a few weeks back I order a new thermostat, and was kind of shocked at the price. That's the first $100 thermostat I bought. Today, after doing my brakes I replaced the thermostat. It looks worse than what it really is. The hardest thing for me as actually getting the gasket material off the head/block. In all I think it took me about 1.5hrs to do it. And I did keep all the 'OEM' hose clamps on there. They didn't seem to be too bad. So, the moral of the story is if your temp gauge is low, replace your thermostat!!

Ryan, could you post a couple of pics of the old tstat? Over at the GDE forum, there is a thread on using an inline tstat that you cut into the upper radiator hose.

THANKS for the info! Mine's operated at 3/8 since I've owned it (just under a year). I didn't want to spend $100+ just to see if it was supposed to be up at 1/2 or not, but now I am convinced! I want to say they quoted me more than that even. I think it is affecting my economy and I have experimented with the radiator block off, and have seen somewhere around 2mpg better, but was afraid of leaving it blocked for fear of inhibiting the intercooler so it went back to stock. I was going to wait till 100K when i did my timing belt, etc and do it all at the same time. I am at 91K now, and may just do the thermostat now that you've enlightened me. I'm also interested in your thermostat pics, and what are the chances one could find a same temp thermostat for another vehicle that would fit? Again THANKS a ton for sharing your info!

I got the numbers from one of the threads here and ordered from Westbury Jeep/Chrysler/Dodge out of Westbury, NY. Pic borrowed from GDE So my needle is right between the 176 and 216 marks.

I see now...the engine designer decided to make a unnecessarily expensive part when they could have used a 10.00 part instead. Guess I'll have to suck it up and buy one because theres no way any other thermostat could be used in this setup.

I would just like to add that i had the exact same problem/resolution mpg's were down, and it had a tendency to go to the H mark, started at the end of last summer. This winter it had a tenancy to stay at just over a quarter, and i lost mpg. I replaced the tstat and the fan clutch, problems solved. (fan clutch first, then the t stat for the sub 1/2 coolant temp)

I see it is a BEHR made thermostat. What is the part number on the casting under the BEHR cast lable? Maybe this part can be had from another source other than Mopar.
