Anyone tried Royal Purple ATF ?

Hey Guys,

There's 46,000k on the clock, thinking about changing the trans fluid along with the diffs and transfer case. Has anyone out there used Royal Purple ATF? Royal Purple must of recently met the ATF+4 requirements for Chrysler / Jeeps products. I know they didn't meet the requirements a couple years ago. How many litres / quarts does the trans take?

I'm running their stuff in my diffs, and will put their ATF in the trans next go around but haven't yet.

I've also been thinking about trying to use a "high end" atf the hemi guys have been using all of the major big one's, red line Amsoil, RP, etc, in their 545rfe's and things have been fine.

That said valvoline atf+4 is a high quality and affordable fluid, and it's what i use.

Also Wall mart Super tech atf+4 is a good fluid.

The thing is that the aft+4 spec is licensed and they all have the exact same add package and have to meet the same requirements, so in theory, one is as good as another.

However you cant argue that the same add pack in a better base oil group, PAO, ESTERS and group 3 hydro-cracked for example, Have to be better than "normal" atf +4 that has a group 2 and 3/3+ base oil.

Amsoil is not speced for your trans,might want to stay away from it along with redline ATF.

One ATF can not meet all those requirements for all those transmissions,not possible since more then half have different additive packages.


Oh and "racing apps" are drastically different then real world daily driving.

I see the point that one oil can't meet all requirements to all manufacturers. That did cross my mind.

On the other hand I do agree with CRD Miller that, I can't see an oil like RP or Amsoil being worse than the factory OEM. You would think that companies (RP+Amsoil) that mention that they meet specs like ATF+4, would be very careful before putting that on thier lables, so it doesn't come back and bit them in *ss.

We / me could always call RP tech support line and talk to one of their engineers and ask them about RP ATF being used in an application that calls for ATF+4 and see what they say. I called them a couple years back and asked them about diff fluids in a Dodge diesel, they were very helpful!

This is sort of related but not really.....I was talking to a rep for Allison heavy duty transmissons (for heavy trucks) last week. He was saying that the new series Allison trans have reduced their warranty claims by 70% with better quality contol in manufacturing, but the biggest reason why the warranty claims dropped was do to the synthetic transmission fluid. He was saying that trans oil changes can go 3 times longer.

I've used it in other vehicles that I've owned. I like it and it does seem to keep the trans temp down. I'm going to use it in the CRD on my next change (which will be as soon as I can afford about 10 quarts of it).lol I'm also going to go with RP for the diffs and trans case.

I pretty much run RP in everything, including my John Deere diesel lawn tractor. I was planning on putting in RP in the diffs and transfer case too. I use Amsoil 5/40 in the engine because RP doesn't make a 0-5 weight oil. The Amsoil is such a pain to get (have to order it). I can buy the RP at my local auto parts retailer whenever I need it.

As a comparison I used to run Amsoil oil in my VTX 1300 motorcycle. Replaced it with 0w-40 full syn mobil run in my CRD and I felt that I had about a 10% increase in horsepower. I also read of mechanics rebuilding engines some with regular oil and some with full synthetic. They reported that even though both were changed regularly the cam lobes with the dino oil had striation marks while the one with the full syn looked like a mirror. I am sure the same would relate to our trannies. Moral of the story is that I am going full synthetic on everything and within manufacturers recommendation. The fluids have never been better. Good luck.

Im an Amsoil guy but Im not running anything other than whats OK'D for my transmission.

TJ, any suggestions as to what youre running in your trans?

Mopar ATF+4,the only thing the dealership get's to touch on my KJ every 15,000miles due to the high cost of a flush machine and the warranty there service gets.
