When I get in the Jeep, particularly when it's been sitting for a while, start it and put it in reverse...it sits there for a few seconds. Then it'll finally engage and move. Any guesses? ![]() My tranny also upshifts quickly. Like...I'm in 3rd by the time I hit 35 MPH. Don't know if this is all related or not. |

No. IIRC, its the drainback in the filter. Mine does that too when it sits for days without driving. I usually put it in R, it doesn't go. Remember the issue. Put it back in P, let it sit for a few seconds with a gentle blip of the throttle and then back into R. |

Yep, ATF drainback, just like many of us. 5-10 seconds in reverse with the foot on the break after start-up seems to get rid of most of it. |

OK I sort of thought that might be it. Sheww.... I was a little worried. |

There was a TSB on this issue a while back. Solution was to replace a line inside the tranny that was split. |

I started experiencing this several weeks ago after fluid/filter change. I think I may have slightly overfilled so that is what I am attributing it to. |

It is usually caused by a lack of pressure build up. Low fluid or leaky line, but may not be caused by overfilling. You get everything back together right like "O" ring and such? |

Sure hope so. You bring up a good point; one thing I didn't look at closely was the spin-on filter. Is there a replaceable o-ring there? After warm-up, everthing shifts fine. Fluid registers to full warm mark while still cold. Went with 5 full qts after filter change. |

On those, it's pretty straight forward in that you need to make sure the old gasket didn't come off the filter and get stuck on there. 2 gaskets won't seal. You're probably about 1/2 qt too full. That's just a guess, but I'd drain it out to full when hot and see if that made a difference before going back in. Do you still have the old spin on? |

IIRC, there is no seperate O-Ring gasket on the spin on, but there is one on the tube part of the pancake filter. I'm having issues with my tranny too, but it's not slow to engage reverse, even when cold. Here's my saga: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=50040 Lib2.8, did you give siphoning the excess fluid a try? |

First thing to check is fluid level. Make sure the tranny is hot, engine running, and parked on level ground. But I had this same problem (along w/ shudder, low-speed lock-up, etc). Replaced the tranny pump and TC w/ the upgraded parts and all tranny problems have vanished. No shudder, no drainback even after sitting for days (with the original parts it would have drainback issues after sitting overnight), no slow-speed lock-up, nothing. It was expensive but it's given the CRD an entirely new life. |

Quote: Lib2.8, did you give siphoning the excess fluid a try? Just an update on fluid levels from previous post. I have since added 1 and 1/2 more quarts bringing the total to 7 quarts after filter change. Fluid is still in the low zone so I will add some more. Not sure where i got the idea that all it took was 5 quarts; hope I didn't do any damage running low fluid level ![]() |

Last update...my tranny took a full 8 quarts to bring it back to the full mark while hot and running. Hope there is no damage from running 3 quarts low for several hundred miles. There were no indications of problem other than slow to engage in reverse when cold. |

Tranny acting up again today. Lately, since changing fluid and filters, it has been slow to move after shifting into gear so I usually have to wait for several seconds for pressure build-up. Today, after sitting all day, I got in and took off right away. Libby would not shift into higher gears. Was going 65 at 3000+ RPM's. Shifted into neutral or park at redlights. when shifting back into drive, very hard shift. After sitting for several hours, shifted fine again. Is the end of tranny or TC near? What's the deal? |

Appreciate the response but was looking for some CRD Liberty-specific feedback; others? |

The only time mine wouldn't shift into Overdrive - it was cold - worked fine after it warmed up of course you're in Al/La - shouldn't be too cold. only other suggestion is to 2x check fluid levels - sometimes changing fluid will leave an air bubble somewhere. also - some of the gassers have had problems with the shift body - but that would have been noticeable when you changed filters. |

One more possibility. There is a check valve in the front pump that can cause the slow to engage in reverse problems. SunCoast throws in a check valve repair kit with their torque converter kit. Another reason SunCoast came up with the check valve repair kit was to avoid any shudder experienced with the installation of their converter which was installed to cure the problem. When I put in mine, the check valve repair kit will be done as well. The other fix is to replace the front pump with a new one. Not having to buy the front pump sweetens the SunCoast upgrade for me. For now, try all the other tricks like replacing the filters in the pan, that may have bad anti drain back valves. There were some defective Mopar kits being unloaded on eBay a couple years ago that GMCTD caught and put a stop to. But there is always a chance with all of the Chrysler dealers that closed up, some of the defective Mopar filter kits got pulled out of the dumpsters and sold. When I found out about the defective Mopar filter kits, I ordered a Wix who was not the supplier of the defective ones. Even with a good brand of filter, there is a slim chance it has a defective drain back valve. Remember the golden rule,"Go for the Cheap Fix First as long as it is not Half Assed". |

That is when the problem started. Did drive for several hundred miles with approx 3 qts low on fluid. Could that have attributed to the problem or do you just think I got a bad filter? |
