Post subject:  Newb question re: P0299 fault code

I bought an '05 CRD from a dealer on Saturday. Drove it about 100 miles and the CEL came on. Fault code P0299 is 'turbocharger underboost.'

Readout says: blocked or leaking air intake; damaged turbo; faulty boost pressure sensor.

Any ideas???

I'm caught in a hard spot. I begin caring for a parent with dementia on Friday.

The (Ford) dealer I bought it from wants it back to have a 'good mechanic' look at it. That means 40 miles shuttle each way. It also sounds like some of the stuff that I've read about here. Such as having the dealer racking up lots of miles.

The odo is at 67,000. The drive train warranty on '05's is 70K. Should I take this to the dealer instead.

TIA

Check the boost hoses for leaks is the first thing to do. If they are the original hoses they are susceptible to degradation from oil that comes in contact with them. May have to take them off to check as sometimes the split is hard to find.

The CEL went off today. Could an intermittent CEL indicate a sensor instead of a hose? This engine compartment looks like new. I doubt I'd ever find another one this clean. So, I guess trouble shooting begins.

Problem for me is I don't know what a good running CRD feels like. This one seems to have adequate boost. Coming out of the hole it creeps. . . as it shifts into second it'll sit you back in your seat. I just took it for turbo lag although it's almost a full second.

An ALH series VW TDI spools up quicker than this.

PS The dealer who sold and serviced the car said it had only been in for oil changes. That seems very unusual for a CRD. This car was bought, serviced, and sold in Logan, UT, so tracking things down wasn't difficult.

thanks for any advice,

TJ

Sounds like what WolverineFW said. CAC hose. If they haven't been replaced, it's time anyway with 67000 miles on the clock.

TJ,

Welcome to the forum and to the world of CRD ownership. If you are diligent in searching this site for answers, you will learn a lot about this little beast's idiosyncrasies.

Usually if the CAC (Charge Air Cooler) hoses go bad, you will get quite a bit of black exhaust smoke from overfueling. If the hoses that run from the turbo to the intercooler, and from the intercooler to the intake, show no signs of oil seepage or cracking, and there is no more than normal black smoke from your exhaust, then it may be the MAP Sensor. I was getting a P0299 code when my MAP sensor was gummed up with EGR soot and oil. Here is a link that shows you the location and how to remove/ clean the sensor: viewtopic.php?f=98&t=22630 Also, I would suggest using chlorine-free brake parts cleaner when you clean it.

One of the basic things to understand in the design of our engines is the combination of soot from the EGR and engine oil from the CCV puck, and how detrimental that combination can be. IMHO, these are the primary things you need to defeat to maintain trouble-free operation, and both can be done very cheaply.

Here is a link explaining the CCV and the oil it introduces to the intake, and how to defeat it: viewtopic.php?f=98&t=22703
Here is a link explaining the Off Road Mod, to defeat the EGR valve: viewtopic.php?f=98&t=22631

Once again, welcome to the forum and we hope to see you gain the knowledge here that will help you fully enjoy your CRD.

i have yet to see ANY black smoke out of mine at 37,000 but a little Gray when you FLOOOORRRR it to pass some one... I have seen that

Thanks Guys,

The CAC hoses are NEW. No dust in the mesh, perfect factory lettering and Daimler-Benz logo on the clamps. . . all new. I guess the techs knew something.

Someone wrote a post about leakage around the clamps. These are squared up nicely to the fittings and are secure.

I cleaned the MAP sensor. It was pretty well caked up with soot. The mileage on the first tank was 19 mpg. It's not what I was hoping for.

As far as the P0299 code, I'm beginning to wonder about a mechanical with the turbo. There is some over fueling. The exhaust lays down a cloud of black smoke coming off the line. The turbo does spool up nicely at higher RPM's, like climbing a local mountain pass. So, it is definitely doing something.

thanks again for the suggestions. . . . any more ideas?

Your EGR system is starting to clog, making it more difficult to flow EGR. The P0299 code is related to how the EGR system works and it is most likely not an issue with the turbo. As the EGR clogs it requires the EGR valve to open further to allow the proper flowrate. At the same time the FCV (intake throttle) is having to close further to create a larger pressure differential to help flow EGR. The FCV being very closed at idle and at low rpm can cause the P0299 error code and will cause visible smoke at launch, delayed response and excessive turbo lag. The EGR is your next project by the sound of it.

Or, put another way. . .

No longer needing the EGR is your next project. . .

Well gents,

I guess I'm good to go. I pulled the MAF wiring and put on a breather tube. My ears tell me the turbo spooled up a lot quicker. . . course I could have psyched myself into that.

I'm having trouble getting to the actual websites for the Provent and SEGR mods. Diesels aren't emission tested here, but the air is crap in the winter. So, I will get the appropriate stuff done before next season's cold weather inversions.

Greendiesel, thanks for the tips. I've been to your site a couple times and didn't find out what your chips actually do?

Well, it's drive time for me. Not sure when I'll get much chance to do any more tweeking.

thanks everyone for the help

I`m having the 299 code here too.. it happened before, dealer said it was the vacum solenoid ... and they in theory replaced it.

A few days ago, intermittent 299 again, i got of the car, taped the vacuum solenoid and it started working again... then it stopped working a few days later...

i`m guessing mine is bad. have yet to go out and get a new one.

I had this same fault recently, along with a p1252. It ended up being a solenoid(vacuum reservoir solenoid) . Look into all of the fault codes and see what else is there. If this is suspect, it is very easy to check with an ohm meter. The solenoid should have 30ohms resistance (just unplug the solenoid and but a meter on leads). Looking at the engine bay there is a black box on the left hand side with a small filter on the bottom the solenoid is located right by that (nearly on top of) and just pull it straight up to get it off. I bought a new one at the local jeep dealer for $28.00.

Email if you have any questions about finding it and ill send a pic. mbsulliv2@gmail.com
