Other then the normal things that I would look for when buying any used car (ie maintenance records, carfax, etc...). Is there anything that I should look for that relates directly to the CRD. Is there a mod or two that I should get right away? Thanks for the help.

Hopefully youll find an owner who is an enthusiast like I did. My trucks previous owner took darn good care of the truck.. Besides he installed a Suncoast TC, TransCo shift kit and Inmotion chip. If you get a previous owner who is a gear head youve got it made.

yeah mostly normal stuff. look at the boost hoses maybe, check the oil and all the fluids. the oil in our engines gets black almost as soon as you change it and drive away, so if the oil looks dark it not always cause for concern.

I found out more about mines previous owner. I met his son. Told me he had some problems with it but it was good over all and he traded it for a GC CRD. He wanted something bigger that had more luxuary than my pretty loaded Liberty Limited. He also told me they burned bio in it from time to time.

Mine was a rental before I owned it.

Things to look at:

Boost hoses leading to/ from the intercooler. If they are oil-soaked, that is not a bad thing necessarily but you will need to budget for some replacements in the near future.

If they will let you, pull and check the MAP sensor. That will give you an idea of whether or not the previous owner knew how to defeat the main causes of frustration in this engine. Link here: viewtopic.php?f=98&t=22630 If it is oily and sooted up, you know they were allowing the EGR to operate.

If you decide to buy it, here are the first two things you should do:

Off Road Mod: viewtopic.php?f=98&t=22631 (make sure you tape off the connections after unplugging)

Elephant Hose Mod: viewtopic.php?f=98&t=22703

Spend some time reading through the threads in this section and in the CRD Tech section to familiarize yourself with what other owners have learned and done, and you will set yourself up to have a good relationship with your new CRD.

There are some mods that you CAN do. Do you have to....NO. There are some maintanance items that will need to be done on a weekly basis. Some monthly. This isn't a get in and drive and never look at it again type of ride.

Remember the minute you unplug that MAF youre going to get a dash warning light. Dont worry about it. My MAF has been unplugged for 40+,000 miles. I used black electric tape to tape off the connections. My KJ previous owner added in a Provent so the elephant hose wasnt necessary.
