I'm wanting to buy a code scanner/reader and the parts store has 2types, one is a new gen CAN BUS and the other is a 1st gen guaranteed only on cars up to 2003, but some had that write code up till 2007. The latter is half the price, and the only reason I ask.

The CRD is M.I.C.K.E.Y. M.O.U.S.E.... Protocol...

search on Scangauge - basically it started with an ISO 9141 implementation (pretty sure CAN )
but kluged it to avoid spending the money to properly rewrite the code.

only buy things with a good return policy

(Scangauge II works fairly well for about 10-15 minutes and then kicks out - and it you have it on with cruise control - it will kick out of overdrive - unnerving)
