I pulled the turbo shield to get at the EGR pipe at the back of the manifold. The connection and pipe were sound. The rear turbo and exhaust down pipe appear intact as well. I guess it must be forward of the turbo...near the Samco. Any ideas??? I guess I will just have to pull stuff out until I find what is wrong. There appeared to be exhaust/oil sprayed on the power steering fluid reservoir, from the front of the turbo. Where is Mr. Wizard? |

Try to tighten the turbo to exhaust manifold bolts. If that don't fix it, must be blown gasket. |

Wow, are the turbo to manifold nuts are difficult to get to. I would think there would be some kind of indicator of failure like soot or erosion of metal. Have to buy a wrench to fit the front bolt, something long and skinny maybe with the ratcheting box end. Well, at least I am becoming familiar with the turbo. Just in case the turbo has a hole in it I suppose I could switch it out with a GDE turbo. |

I'm thinking that may be just a busted turbo hose. Have you pulled the turbo-to-intercooler hose and checked it very closely and carefully? Maybe checked to make sure the hose is seated correctly on the flange? Or are we talking a LOT of oil? |

The top front turbo to manifold nut on the stock unit was exceedingly difficult for me to get a grip on when I swapped the stock unit out for the GDE turbo kit. Think I spent almost one whole hour working at that pig. If you have some good, long wrenches with a decent angle on the "circle" end you might be able to get at it. That's what GDE told me they did. My wrench wouldn't work for that bolt as the wrench would have always interfered with something solid when trying to turn no matter how I slipped it over the nut. I ended up using a socket with a flexible joint and long extensions to sneak up in there. It wasn't pretty. Good luck and don't strip that nut! P.S. I have a stock turbo I'm no longer using in case you need another one and don't have the $ for the GDE kit . . . although I give high marks to the GDE kit. fastRob wrote: Wow, are the turbo to manifold nuts are difficult to get to.

And, yes it was seated on the flange correctly. I was just out trying my new wrench on it. It did not fit. Will try one other wrench. Will keep you in mind for the turbo, thanks again, but I really would like to buy a GDE kit.. |

Which size of wrench are you putting on those bolts? This is what my 06 bolts looked like. http://www.flickr.com/photos/10201173@N06/4465051483/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/10201173@N06/4465827458/ |

Just food for thought, All sockets have different tolerances. For example, snap off is one of the tightest sockets you can by. That is why most of the old car techs have snap off. In the heavy machinery market, Mac is # 1 because most heavy machine bolts are covered in 1/2 an inch of paint...LOL |

The 12mm did not work so I figured it was a 13mm but it was loose. Just hope my 1/2 is tight. Who would design something like this? Did anyone take off the vaccum activated rascal on top of the turbo? Also thought about disassembling the turbo some. |

Taken off the Turbo was the most fun it had without.... well u know.. the nuts and axcess were something that drove me well NUTs. I had to work some then back off from it for a half day. But I was able to replace my BLOWN TURBO with a rebuilt unit from USED TURBOS.COM. for $400 + $15 Shipping. And had great results. ![]() ![]() Turbos are FUN... ![]() 4 |

Losing my mind on this one. Put it back together, I found nothing and it is still noisy. I must find someone who has a clue. |

Just talked with a guy who said the vacuum waste gate might be stuck. That must be the vacuum device on top in the front of the turbo that makes it difficult to get to the front turbo nut. Must fix this before I send off the ECU for flashing, must fix this so I can find my mind, it is lost. |

well if your turbo has a waste gate then I dunno what to tell you........ cause mine doesn't have one. |

Post subject: | Re: Bad Sound Near Turbo, Not EGR Pipe, Not Exhaust |
We do have a vacuum motor on the turbo, but it is NOT for a wastegate. It is for the VNT vanes, which makes our turbo able to have a variable inlet. I'm playing with a similar problem on mine, still haven't got it sorted yet but I DO think it is related to the turbo or a sensor in some way. I have just recently done the same thing as you, pulling the heat shield to "fix" the EGR pipe. That is now no longer an issue, and I do believe it has helped retain some of the flow within the turbo itself. This has helped reduce the incidence of my power loss issue. Interestingly enough, today the Jeep felt "heavier" again, with less power, even though the boost was staying higher than it has in the past while shifting. Before Sunday, when I would shift from 2nd to 3rd, the boost would plummet from 18psi to about 6 - Almost instantly. This was telling me that I was having a boost leak, which has been proven true by Monday and today's runs: Same road, same speeds, boost still lowered, but MUCH more slowly, and held at 11/12 after the shift. I can still hear air or exhaust escaping when the engine is overfueling and smoking... Then when it suddenly "wakes up" and the boost shoots up, vroom and I get the power. I had thought that the air leak was into the EGR tube b/c the EGR valve was stuck open... Since I can still hear it, and better now, I'm starting to wonder if it might be the turbo vanes itself, as this is the new turbo I got installed just 10 miles before the engine blew. I never had a chance to experience this turbo's performance before the engine died. It could be that the vanes are sticking. If so... How do I fix that? Can it be fixed? It isn't like I can lube them with anything that would survive the heat, right? I really wasn't looking to pull this turbo and swap the exhaust housing (with my EGT probe) onto my spare turbo... But if I have to, at least I have the spare. |

Don't separate the center cartridge from the exhaust housing unless you absolutely have to! The vanes are in the housing and if you don't use extreme caution, they'll fall out on the floor (along with the internal linkages) and it's a bit of a pain in the booty to put back together and have working properly. The newer Garrett StepII that GDE uses on the turbo kit has everything attached to the center cartridge, making disassembly much easier and friendly. |

Mr Mopar... You sure about that? I did a postmortem on my old turbo after the center shaft snapped, and the VNT vanes didn't fall out at all. I was able to separate that cartridge from the exhaust housing without anything hitting the floor. I'll go back and look at it again before I do anything to my existing turbos. I'd rather have to drill the spare's housing and weld on another nut (for the EGT) than deal with reassembling a turbo that fell to pieces on me. ![]() |
