All,

My CRD has developed a concerning noise under the hood that I need help diagnosing. Description - when the key is turned to "ON" the squealing starts (i.e. before the engine turns over) and the squealing continues a few seconds after the engine stops running. The squealing has become quite loud. What do you think? Is there a fuel pump that pressurizes the rail? Any help will be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance.

Unplugging the FCV is a fast way to check this. Does your CRD have a lift pump installed? The lift pump circuit is wired to run as soon as the key goes to ON, and continue running for 10 seconds after the key is turned OFF. But if it is the FCV... You are OK running with that unplugged - I've had it completely unplugged for several months now, with no ill effects OR any CEL. And the shutdown seems just ducky to me, no "rough shutdown" like it is supposed to be there for. On the contrary, I'd say the biggest use of the FCV is to further annoy the engine by increasing the EGR flow instead of clean life-giving air to the cylinders.

Totally can live without that. :banghead:

Are you sure the lift pump runs for 10 seconds after shutdown? What would be the reason for it? I know mine shuts off immediately after the key is turned off, I am wired into the factory circuit.

It doesn't run on after you key off. It does run on for about 15 seconds after you key on if you don't crank it.

Then the lift pump is ruled out as the problem in this case.

Didn't someone on here have a problem with a vacuum accumulator making a lot of racket? Not sure if it was a squealing sound though....
