Post subject:  Fuel blend chang over
does anyone know when they change to winter blends fuels and back the summer blends?

It's been warmer the last week or so and I have noticed my MPG going up little by little. not sure if its fuel or the warmer temps.

It has already started. They phase it in, in the spring and fall. Don't know the spring date but fall date is Sept 15th. Prices rising in the spring are a sure sign they are making the good stuff.

It's interesting you say this because I was always under the impression that the winter additives cost more than diesel they are displacing.

Your thinking is indeed correct. Don't believe me, just price K1 that's what they blend D2 with to make winter fuel. And it does not include road tax :shock: Before speculators starting playing around Diesel prices used to come down in the spring once the demand for home heating oil was over :SOMBRERO:

I have been paying 3.01 at hess. I'm now up to 20.8 mpg

In Kentucky, they can't sell Winter fuel until Oct. 15th. The Governor signed some paperwork that allowed them to start selling it Oct. 1st a year or two ago during the fuel crunch though.

I'm not sure when the Spring date is...but it can't come soon enough for me. I HATE Winter fuel.

By "good stuff", I meant the type of fuel that gives us the best MPG's. That is what the OP was talking about wasn't it?

It's more about demand than speculating. As temps in the spring rise, and daylight savings time kicks in, people are more active. The spring rise in fuel prices is just an example of prices gearing up towards the summertime traveling that most do. We use more fuel when it's warm, not cold.

We're talking diesel here not gasoline :juggle: I've been driving diesel powered vehicles since 1978 and the price of diesel is directly tied to home heating oil. Much of the north east part of the country heats with fuel oil :seuss: So part of what your saying is true. But there is more demand for home heating oil in the fall and winter and not in the spring and summer. Except for the past two or three years from 1978 onward it has always gone up in price in the fall and came down in the spring.

Daylight savings time and personal diesel consumption has little to nothing to do with it. The main users of diesel and similiar products are the trucking industry, road building equiptment, railroads and commercial airlines. All of which are down because of the economy. So the demand is down and prices are rising so we're back to speculation :jester:

It's all related. Refinery stuff. Here, the fuel prices , gas and diesel always go up in spring and summer, and down in winter. Always have. Demond for BOTH types of fuel always go up in the summer. You think us CRD drivers are the only ones with diesel powered rigs? Speculation only really comes into play when somebody farts over in the mideast.


Refiners will start to pull down their inventory of winter gasoline well in advance of the May 1st deadline. On that date, all gasoline in the system has to meet the stricter requirements, and this "summer blend" is costlier to produce because it contains less butane
