It's more about demand than speculating. As temps in the spring rise, and daylight savings time kicks in, people are more active. The spring rise in fuel prices is just an example of prices gearing up towards the summertime traveling that most do. We use more fuel when it's warm, not cold.
We're talking diesel here not gasoline

I've been driving diesel powered vehicles since 1978 and the price of diesel is directly tied to home heating oil. Much of the north east part of the country heats with fuel oil

So part of what your saying is true. But there is more demand for home heating oil in the fall and winter and not in the spring and summer. Except for the past two or three years from 1978 onward it has always gone up in price in the fall and came down in the spring.
Daylight savings time and personal diesel consumption has little to nothing to do with it. The main users of diesel and similiar products are the trucking industry, road building equiptment, railroads and commercial airlines. All of which are down because of the economy. So the demand is down and prices are rising so we're back to speculation
