I posted this a little while back. Our libby has funny rattle that I thought could have been timing rattle but it wasn't. I am now more curious b/o one of my wife's good friends pick up a used 05. I looked it over for her (in good shape except a some worth least mechanic didn't put the front skid on after a front axle fluid change) and it has the same rattle but at different times. On both trucks I checked visually checked the motor mounts, alt pulley and belt tensioner and all look good. On ours, the rattle only occurs when the truck is coasting at low speed in gear, like noodling around the neighborhood. The other truck does it while in reverse but not moving. The dealer the 05 was bought at will fix anything I find wrong within 30 days of purchase so I'd like to figure this out.

Mine does the same thing. It sounds to me like it's coming from the rear of the vehicle....but what I'm actually thinking is it could be the torque converter. These got crappy TCs from the factory and they will rattle like that when dying from what I hear. When I get mine replaced next week I'll know for sure if that's where the rattle came from.

The diagnosis for the TC death rattle is made in Park though.

I tried chasing the same rattle at idle speed in drive in mine. I tighten the motor mounts, took the shields off and ran it up on the lift. I found out that it's just normal diesel rattle. Doh'

I was performing a Diesel Purge on the CRD last night and as it was idling through the can of Purge in the garage I heard the same rattle from the back of the vehicle as heard from inside. It sounded like it was coming from right behind the right rear door.

I got down and listened around the wheel well and then grabbed the tailpipe (it wasn't hot) and pushed it up a little. Rattle gone. Let go of tailpipe, rattle was back.

It appears to be (as I believe others have found) that it's the muffler/tailpipe hangars. The hangar rod from the tailpipe has some slop in the rubber 'donut', and the donut rubber is getting hard, so the muffler is rattling around in the donut and that transmits to the cabin.

I'm going to try to put a sleeve of thin rubber over the hangar rod to take up the slop in the bushing as a cheap fix.

I would fill it up with silicone and let it set over night.

That would make sense with the behavior of the sound. I'll check it out.

All the rattles that I heard coming from underneath the right rear door area stpped when i swapped out my muffler with a lighter 2 1/2 magnflow.

I now have a quiet little beast ready to charge at a moments notice

Muffler who needs a muffler with a turbo on the engine. I have been without a muffler for 3 years and 110k no problems. It breaths alot better and I dumped about 35 to 40 lbs off the vehicle.
