Hi all,

I've been looking for a replacement for one of my cars for a while now and the Liberty CRD has been at the top of my list. I'm a Jeep guy (have a 70 Jeepster and, until recently, a 97 Cherokee) and the CRD package offers what I'm looking for. I'm not timid about working on my own rig and at this point am just waiting to find the right one. After poking around this forum for a while, I've got a few questions before taking the plunge.

1. I live right outside of Washington, DC and have to get an emissions inspection every other year (in addition to the yearly safety inspection). From what I can tell, the EHM won't pass muster for these. Does anyone know if the Provent is inspection-friendly? From what I can tell, it just condenses the oil out but keeps the EGR system as a closed loop.

2. I've got the same question for SEGR and GDE tune options. Are these emissions friendly?

3. Any tips for a prospective buyer when checking out vehicles? Trouble spots to check? Questions to ask?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

You can take the VIN to a dealership and they can print out a report showing what has been done to the Jeep in the past. That might give you a head start. Sometimes it just comes down to luck. The day after I bought this one, the CAC hoses bust. $500 and a week later I was back on the road. So all you can do is give the prospective Jeep a thorough look-over, investigate it's past, and hope for the best when you buy it.

For whatever it's worth, my previous CRD (bought new in May 2005) is now for sale by it's second owner and I know the entire history of it. It's on craigs list in central KY right now.

All the GDE tunes will pass state inspections as the CEL is off and the opacity is about 60% less than the stock configuration. If the state has the ability to test HC and CO, this is still not an issue as these are about 30-40% lower than stock with a GDE tune.

1) Yes
2) Depends on the test. If they actually test opacity, etc (not just a visual), you can always run some biodiesel....
3) Check the CAC hoses to see if they are soft, but those are easy to replace. Check for CELs. Ask about maintenance records.

Thanks all for the tips. I am sure this will be the first of many questions. Looking forward to the start of the fun.

i dont know how you feel about the sound of your crd but.......if you want lower EGT's straight pipe it from the downpipe back but keep the stock exhaust to throw it back on b/f inpections. I dont mind the sound only b/c of the turbo. Also unlike some i guys say....mine does not drone..AT ALL! just a little raspy.

The EHM is so easy all you have to do is put the pipe back on the valve....then take it back off after inspection.

Ditto with the rest of the guys on the tune.
