'05 CRD, 65k, non-F37, cat back exhaust

shuddering during deceleration, gets more violent with increased brake pressure.
frequency of vibration slows with vehicle slowing.
just finished full brake job, front rotors/pads, rear rotors/pads/shoes/hardware, so no warped rotors
not the same sensation as the TC shudder.
left and right rear axle shafts have ~1/32" in/out play.

I am going out now to check my ball joints, but ANY ideas will help.

Seems like I had a Ford Explorer as a company truck that did that when the "U" joints went out. Might give them a look.

Checked the front suspension per the instructions on the forum. Any movement of my 2x4x8' resulted in equal movement of the control arm, so no play there. Also checked lateral and vertical play while the wheels were up, nothing. Checked the front half shafts, left has about 1/16" of in/out play at the diff, but no rotational or lateral play in the joints. Right has about 3/16" in/out, but again, no rotational or lateral play in either inboard or outboard joints. Checked the rears again, and found the same 1/32" or so in/out play, but nothing denoting a wheel bearing.

I get the same vibration when slowing in gear, and in neutral, which is why I did the brake job in the first place... thought it was a warped rotor.

The vibration is getting noticeably worse though.

I will check the u-joints now.

I would check the drive shafts real close. I believe that the front shaft has a slip/ball type joint behind a boot that goes bad.

I climbed under, and gave the drive shaft a good yank back and forth. At the rear u-joint, all is solid. At the front u-joint, there is a clicking noise, and I can feel the clicking. There isn't enough movement to actually see, but I am wondering if this is enough to off balance it enough to cause the vibrations.

Now... I am going to take it into the dealer to get it fixed under warranty.... after my non- F37 TCM arrives that is. Should I tell the dealership where I found the clicking, or should I let them figure it all out?

The more you tell them, like the "front U joint clicks" the less apt they are to screw things up or miss it.

We should all have a discussion on which wires going to the OBD II need to be switched off with a hidden switch, so we can pull codes with out letting the Dealer RAPE our Tuned ECMs and soon to be Tuned TCMs if there is another recall.

Are you sure the clicking isn't some play in the output shaft of the transfer case? I was under there checking mine one day and it seemed like there was play there, not the u-joint.

I bent my rear shaft a little bit a few years ago pulling someone out of a ditch. It was enough to cause a big vibration like the one you're describing.

My F37 TCM finally arrived on Wed of last week, so I drove the CRD over to the dealer on Thurs. After some flitting back and forth with them, the final diagnosis was;

seized rear u-joint
worn front u-joint
bent rear drive shaft
blown pinion input seal
dead rear wiper motor
stripped rear wiper splines
"noisy" alt pully/clutch

All fixed under my 12mo bumper to bumper :D
