I need the name of the adhesive tape people are using as a temporary fix when a leak is detected in the turbo hoses. I would like to keep a roll in the vehicle as a precaution. Anybody know? |

Gorilla tape has been reported by members to be a good temporary fix. I keep a roll under my seat. I have not used it on hoses yet, but it held up the left rear window when the plastic in the window regulator broke. |

Use self-amalgamating silicone rubber tape. It's also known as self-fusing silicone rubber tape. Sold at Harbor Freight as "X-Treme Tape" Other brands include "Tommy Tape", "Turbo Tape", "Rescue Tape", and Scotch No. 70. From an earlier post: "It took 2-1/2 rolls of 1" x 10' tape to do the turbo-intercooler hose. The hose had a plastic braid covering and rubber sleeves at both ends. The sleeve at the intercooler was deteriorating. Harbor Freight has "X-Treme Tape" @ 4.99 USD (in-store price) for a 1" x 10' roll: Probably takes 6-7 rolls for both hoses." |

Why wait until the hose fails? I wraped my new hoses with the stuff. Hopefully, it'll help the hoses last longer. I got 70k out of the OEM hoses and replaced with OEM. |

Just checked my CAC hoses, I removed them for inspection for the first time and here is what I found. The driver side CAC hose looked brand new, the inside of this hose was red in color while the passenger side CAC hose looked old and was tighly wrapped with black tape, is this right? The previous owner told me that he had the dealer replace both hoses with OEM hoses but the passenger side hose looks like it isn't new but has been repaired. How long does this tape last? |

I recall someone put a sleeve of S.S. braid over the hoses....that looked really cool. I'm really thinking along that line. |

Racertracer, sounds like someone did repair that hose, rather than replaced it. The new OEM hoses (or severely cleaned with brake cleaner) should look all pretty and red inside. If you do an EHM, the oil won't intrude into the hoses and eat them from the inside out anymore. I just replaced my airbox-to-turbo hose with the one from my replacement engine b/c the original had been degraded right at the turbo inlet by the oil from the CCV... To the point that the ring at the end under the hose clamp actually ROTTED OFF! Yuk! But since doing the EHM... Both my boosted hoses have stayed fairly clean. The residual slime is MUCH less than before, and I blame that on the intake just cleaning itself out of all the accumulated oil from 75k miles of abuse. Oh - And Home Depot sells a self-sealing Silicone tape in the plumbing aisle. Silicone Stretch and Seal, $6 for like a 1" by 15' roll |

The "new" replacement OEM CAC hose from Turbo to intercooler comes wraped in silicone like tape. It should have a similar wraped appearance as the SAMCO hoses. The intercooler to intake does not. At least my OEM replacements were that way. |

why didn't the just make it right to begin with? geordi, when my wife hoses go..I'm going your route..there is a local hose/hydraulic shop in town..and PVC is cheap at the same time I look into adding a boost tap to an elbow. is yours running any better? pm I think your issues are different than mine..so it might not be the CP3? -dkenny |

So the passenger side OEM turbo hose is wrapped with tape straight from the factory, so mine is OK and I will not need a replacement. Thanks Big Ugly. |

Heh, it works pretty good, and it is still holding. I popped one of the hose clamps last week, knew exactly what it was when it happened. Of course, it had to be at the bottom of the chain, so I got to pull the battery to fix it on the side of the road. I left it idling while I did that, I didn't feel like resetting everything. 10 minutes later, all back together and tighter. I'm still having that same power loss problem, but it has lessened in intensity somewhat. Now I'm also starting to have the transmission drainback issue a lot more often while it is parked overnight. Obviously I need to do a tranny service and fix that... I just have zero time right now - working 16 hour days 7 days per week. That would be OK, if there was overtime for it. This sucks. The interesting thing with the power loss... I've always thought that the boost dropped VERY fast when the engine shifts, no matter how deep into the throttle I am. It doesn't seem to want to hold anything above 10-12 except in first gear. Poking at it tonight while driving tho... I heard a noise change between <10 psi and 15+... It sounded like an air escape that went away when the boost got higher. I'm not thinking boost leak, but maybe the manifold or the turbo is loose and allowing the exhaust to escape until it tightens up with the force of the higher pressures. It did seem to be on the passenger side. At least my intention of mucking around in there will give me an excuse to pull off the EGR tube and ENSURE that it cannot ever pass any gasses again... I'm thinking a nice big solid plate should do the trick. Or I'll just weld it shut. |

I keep a roll of "rescue" brand tape in the car. It is like its made for the CRD-high temp resistant, oil resistant, strong hold, etc |

Self-fusing silicone rubber tape is not an adhesive tape. It only adheres (fuses) to itself. That's why it's important to tension the tape as it is lapped. The compression of the wrapped tape keeps it from slipping off the object being wrapped. Just wrapped a pitchfork handle with it a few minutes ago. Might do the torch next. There's strange goings on up at the castle lately. |
