I have heard that in diesels, synthetic should only be used for long durations between oil changes in which you have a sample sent in to test the oil. Since this costs half the price of the oil change I have heard that changing my oil on a regular basis synthetic could actually be bad in the long run???????? Any truth to this, also what kinds of oil do you guys prefer?

Synthetic. Change it every 6k miles and don't worry about it.

I use Mobil 1 5w40, others use Shell Rotella or Amsoil. Make sure you get the diesel version and the 5w-40

Haven't we been here before? :banghead:
I like 100% synthetic motor oil in my CRD and I'm useing biodiesel to make up for the lack of lubricity in ULSD fuel!

This isnt an issue OR question. THE ENGINE REQUIRES SYNTHETIC OIL!!!

Enough said.

This has been asked over and over. we even had a detate awhile back over if it was ok or not to use 15w40 shell rotella non synthetic and change it every 3000 miles in a warm climante.

The owners manual calls for full synthetic 0w40 or 5w40 if 0w40 is not available or hard to find.

this leaves a few choices. and prices I have spotted in my area.
0w40 mobile 1 -pep boys 7.99 a quart
5w40 mobile1 turbo diesel truck - Avance Auto 6.99/qt
5w40 Shell Rotella T in the blue bottles (what I use) Wal-mart 19.50/gal or 5.77/qt
5w40 Quaker State Ultimate full synthetic - wal-mart can't remember price
5w40 Amsoil Euro car - local rep 8.69/qt

There are also full Synthetic 5w40 oils by Castrol and Vavloine but I am unsure if they are rated for diesel engines

Due to my rear main seal leak that can't be fixxed... I changed to rotella 15w30 non syn. Abt 29k miles ago... Not one issue. The only change is I change my oil at 3k bs 5k.

It's only $20 per oil change vs $45

and I am happy abt it.

As I understand it all diesels use dino to break in the seals, rings and so on. Certainly my TDI Jetta did. After that first change its synthetic for the rest of its life.

Can I use some synthetic non-diesel Mobil One I have on hand, say for a shorter interval like 2 or 3k miles, without damage? It's cool here (well, cold actually) and I mainly drive a couple of miles to work every day.

Can? Probably. Would I? No way. Just my :2cents:

Assuming it's full syn and the viscosity rating is correct, you should be fine. The "diesel engine" synthetics are given additives to enhance the ability to hold soot and other contaminants in suspension (as Diesels produce more soot, obviously). They do work, and they do allow you to extend your drain intervals somewhat, but ultimately, regular changes with quality products are more important than the additives.

Many here use quality synthetic oils that are not "diesel engine" oils.

What you want to NOT do is use the wrong viscosity range or a organic oil, especially in cold/hot conditions or if the vehicle is only run for short periods (all of which put more stress on the cooling/lubrication components).

Dan, thanks. DoC, do I need to move this, or does an administrator do that?

dgeist gave a good explanation of why you probably can run a non-diesel oil. I just wouldn't run it in my CRD out of personal preference and the fear of possibly having it fry my engine. That and I don't see any benefits out of running non-diesel oil... it costs the same.

No.

Cold weather and you are driving short hops so the engine never really warms up well. That is the hardest service to which you can subject your oil. Those conditions are guaranteed to produce the maximum amount of soot, acid, fuel dilution, and general bad juju, and you propose to do it while using whatever leftover oil you can find around the garage. Doesn't it seem, I dunno, foolish? . . . to risk a $6,000 engine to save what, $25 worth of left over oil???

Do yourself, your Jeep, and the rest of the Universe a BIG favor and THROW THE LEFTOVER OIL AWAY. Better yet, take it back to the oil store and GIVE it back to them, but whatever you do DON'T PUT IT IN YOUR CRD'S ENGINE.

DO, however, GET IT THE H**L OUT OF YOUR GARAGE or the Scotch Jewish Momma in you will drive you insane nagging you to not "waste" the so-called "perfectly good oil."
