Guys, my 05 has been running great until about 3-4 days ago the start up is now taking 2 cycles of about 10-15 sec. to fire the engine. The engine does fire almost normally durring the first COLD start up about 3-5 sec..

It seems that after the engine gets up to temp and runs for a while the next startup is vey delayed, when the engine does finally fires it runs as normal.

Now last night about 2 minuets after starting the engine started to putter out almost as if it lost a cylinder or 2.

I stopped pulled over and tried priming the pump, after a couple of start up attempts it was running as normal.

Any ideas, the hard starts leads me to believe glow plugs? but the crap out on the road makes me think fuel pump, maybe both.

Thanks in advance for the advise.

Cheers!

Is your fuel filter new? Did you get bad fuel? Water in your fuel?

When you tried priming the pump, was there any give? If so, you have air in your fuel... Have you replaced the original fuel heater setup with the new Mopar filter head?

No check engine lights or stored codes?

How many times did the fuel primer need to be pressed before getting very firm? It should only take about 4-5 presses to start feeling some backpressure and 10 presses to make it difficult to push. If it takes significantly longer there is most likely an air leak in the fuel supply.

The glow plugs do not have an impact on starting with a warm engine and based on your location, even if the plugs were failed the engine will still start in 40+ F weather without too much misfire during the crank period. When cranking, is there much(any) smoke coming out of the tailpipe? Is the engine just not firing for a while and then doing a quick start?

Is your KJ equipped with an after-market fuel pump?
