Well, installed the ECU from GDE this morning and it wasn't to tough thanks to the advice from others. I did pull the battery......made life much easier. Almost everything was 10 mm except the 4 ECU bolts which were 8 mm. Now I understand what was mentioned about sliding the ECU plate from the recess. It has to move about 4" towards the front to disengage and the wireing harness is a bit of a witch but still it only took aobut 25 minutes for the whole operation.

I fired up right away and I'm pretty sure it took a lot less cranking and the idle is smoother but I have a CEL that wasn't there before. Has anyone any idea what that might be as I don't have any way to pull codes.

Appreciate any thoughts.

Without the codes, it's difficult to tell. Your local autoparts store may be able to pull them for your for a small fee.

Before you do that, double check to make sure that you plugged everything back in after your install.... and that all the plugs/sensors are seated properly. I've forgotten to plug a sensor back in before and trip a CEL as a result.

Did it happen right away, or during a very hard run

The reason I say, is I got some codes due to high rail pressure while flogging it like Mad Max, but have not had any since. But with out a reader, know one knows..........

Does the "key trick" work on the CRD? I haven't tried it yet...but on most Chryslers you can turn the key to the "ON" position, back to "OFF", back to "ON"...so forth. Do this 3-4 times and you'll see any codes flash on the odometer display.

No :dead: It did on some early ones but one of the many flashes eliminated it :SOMBRERO:

OK, went to Checker and hooked a reader and got a P-0610 code which is "Control Module Option Error", than used the reader to clear the code and it never came back. I sent an email to Keith with the info also so perhaps someone can shed some light on what that is.

Still haven't put the skinny pedal to the mat but in some running around it definity pulls very well. Also, no TC shudder with my stock unit so far so good.

Innova 3030 is the only cheap scanner I know of that works for engine codes. I have an Innova 3120 which is useless on the CRD. Their 3160 works for ABS codes but not for engine or trans codes.

You really need to get something for at least engine codes and keep it in the the vehicle along with a printout of the "code list" from the "CRD tech" section of this site. (Scanner manual sometimes has different descriptions.)

These things throw codes often enough you will be glad you did this.

I'll think about getting a thing to read codes, but I haven't seen any before. Guess I've just been lucky.

Did you disconnect the negative battery cable before pulling/ replacing the ECU?

Thats funny, my 3160 reads and clears codes on 2 CRD ECUs. I cant Imagine the engine software would be any different on the entire 3000 series line of readers?

Yes, I actually pulled the battery which made access very easy.
