I just started using Amsoil HDD 5W30 in my jeep and I live in the province of Quebec (you know, that patch of snow above NY and Vermont states) and the temperature around here can go from 100F to -25F in the most extreme. I was thinking about changing my oil every 12k miles. The recommended interval is 6k miles. Anybody else using HDD 5W30 and what is your oil change interval? So far, the jeep seems to like it. I drive about 50 miles a day, mostly on the highway. I chose the HDD 5W30 because around here, funny phenomenon, the synthetic oil is about double what you guys pay in the States. Mobil 1 5w40 goes for about 50$ a gallon with taxes (kind of funny since the cdn $ is at par with the US $). I don't mind paying a bit extra for the Amsoil (18$/qt) if I can extend the draining interval, it would come to the same thing. BTW, as I said, HDD 5w30 is going for 18$/qt and 5w40 for 15$/qt. How much does it go for in the States?

BTW, I'm not trying to start a war on Amsoil ,I know all the past arguments and the pros and the cons. I'm just trying to get some people with experience to help me take a decision in the best interest of my CRD.

I thought 5w40 or 0w40 were listed as the required oils. Why use 5w30?

A lot of people use that oil because it has a better additive package and the heavy duty part is for real. If you look at the specs, it's very close to the 0w40. It also is supposed to take longer to degrade than conventional synthetic oils. I wanted to go for 5w40 but my Amsoil rep (which I didn't believe at first) convinced me to try it. That guy is an ex Pratt & Whitney employee and I tried to screw him good with my questions but he managed to come up with a good answers every time. I also received some courses on oil at work and I can manage my way pretty good. I also have a friend at work that is a maniac about oil, he double checked my findings and agreed that it should be a good oil. Apparently, the new Wrangler with the 2.8 has 5w30 diesel oil recommended for them in Australia. So far, the little engine seems to like it. The other problem that I have is the temperature range for extended draining interval. It's so wide that it's not easy to choose a type of oil that will do it all and perform well all year round. For me, cold is the worst enemy.

Sorry to disappoint you but there's also Anglos in Quebec. It's actually quite a nice mix (or a mess depending to who you talk to). For example, my wife is anglophone, I'm french, I work mostly in english and my community is about half and half. I chose my area (St-Lazare) because people don't make too much fuss about it. It's amazing to see kids switch from french to english with no accent. The big problem around here, the government is using our cultures to divide us and tax us a bit more each time. But to answer your question, it works quite good in french but the engine sounds a bit different. :-)r Seriously, come visit Montreal someday, you'll see the cultural mix right away, it's probably the most liberal city in Canada due to the French background. Once you're done with the casino, strip clubs, escorts and getting drunk :pepper: (bars close down at 3am, then after-hours, usually Americans only last till 1am before rolling on the floor  ), you'll be able to head out North or East and do some serious sight seeing in Gaspesie or Saguenay or Eastern Townships or Abitibi or going hunting on Anticosti Island (serious wheeling out there, bring 2 spares). The thing I've been told so many times by visitors is that they're amazed that you drive 1 hour in just about every direction and you feel like you're in a totally different country so much the landscape changes. BTW, what do you think about my oil change intervals?

If you want to extend your OCI out to 12K or more, I would think about a good quality bypass filter.
Sure, the oil may be up for it, but what about the particulate contaminates in the oil.
Don't know what micron CAT oil filter you're running, but a good 3 micron absolute or less bypass filter
will let you run the oil for as long as it will hold up.

Is it larger than the Mobil1 M301? Is it a direct fit or is an adapter needed?.......HJ

It's a direct fit and it's a bit bigger, I would say about the same size as the mobil 1. The biggest one I ever used was the Caterpillar Filter. Once again a direct fit but so big, you need to remove a bit of aluminum (about .050") in order to fit it properly. p/n 7W2327. See this thread:http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=44930 It worked pretty well, I just removed it to try the amsoil. The one thing I hate about this truck is the location of the oil filter, making it so vulnerable to debris. I installed an extension to my tranny skid plate that covers entirely the oil filter, just in case.
