I tried to go to the dump with the Diesel Weasel and it finally broke down, but good.
It is either the torque converter or transmission.
Clanging and banging, no engine lights, (plugged in the ORM-MAF plug) now the engine sounds real good again.
Revving it just does not connect to the rear wheels.
Now, to tow it to a transmission shop and spend some money. Why did it take me so long to figure this out?

Broken flexplate?

Bet the T/C bolts loosened up and sheared off. Happened to me. If so you will have to replace the T/C and flexplate and be sure the new bolts are Loctited and torqued to spec.

Mine is an '06.
From sirSam's parts and Factory Service Manual:
Flexplate 52104369AA
Bolts (8) 5014969AA
T/C 68037142AA (Got that from Green Diesel Engineering and this forum) it comes with 4 bolts.
Bolts (4) 1949765AA

The other numbers appear good. Prices appear to be rising T/C is $286.66 plus shipping.

Edited, thanks to CRDMiller

Take the leading 0 off of the bolt part number.

I would order an extra 4 bolts that are supposed to come with the TC. I'm not the only one whose TC arrived from MPA with a hole in the box and some bolts missing. (Apparently, they ship them in the single layer box that Chrysler packages them in.)

I suspect the bolts did not have Loctite on them. SunCoast recommends Red Loctite and according to GDE's observations, Chrysler is now using dry Blue Loctite. A Very Intelligent move on Chrysler's part.
Since the SunCoast has a billet front cover, it can be repaired as could a Euro as long as the welded on tabs are not broken off. The SunCoast could either have the treads fixed with properly installed thread inserts that would be stronger than original or have new holes reindexed. The Euro (or Original) can only have the thread repair done, but again it would be stronger than OEM if done right.
If you have the SunCoast sitting around and go with the Euro, post the SunCoast for sale. Any competent machine shop can do the reindex or thread repair trick and have a good torque converter back in service. Re balancing would be an option, but if you price it cheap, it would still be a bargain. Of Coarse, SunCoast would be happy to repair and/or rebuild it for a fee.

fastRob: Since you got bit in the wallet, make sure the Torque Converter bolts have some kind of Loctite on them. If you can get a hold of the old bolts or take a good look into the threaded holes of the SunCoast converter, the threads will tell the truth and if there is any Loctite it will be obvious, as will the evidence of no Loctite. If there s no Loctite, the Shop that did the work ignored SunCoast's recommendation to use Red Loctite. I am not egging you on to get a Lawyer, but send me a PM if you want the bolts inspected and a deposition or coaching on the technical aspects of a deposition for your Lawyer written up.

Just got home with the Jeep.
The Euro t/c, flexplate, transmission 2 filters, Mopar ATF and transmission temperature sensor installation welded into pan = $1247.00
Temperature gauge reads around 160* @ normal operating speed.
No more shudder!!!! Yay!
Got a look at the old T/C, bolts broken off and holes rounded. Now your Mother told you to use Locktite when you torque these rascals down, you should have listened to her, money does not grow on trees you know :dizzy:
Now if I can scrape up the money for the GDE Hot tune before the end of the month before the price goes back up, everything will be even better.
Thanks for the inputs guys.
First I thought it was the egr pipe, then turbo and then the bolts all broke........

Whew... pricey! FastRob, just fyi, your tstat appears to be reading a little low. Get the HOT Tune, then I might recommend considering a tstat replacement, Mopar or Mr. K's version.

I got mine back from the dealer yesterday. New pump, euro tc and labor including cleaning tc clutch material out of the transmission and inspecting clutch packs was $1272. My extended warranty covered all but the $100 deductable. I hope there's some kind of locktite on the bolts

GDE has a "full torque Eco tune" It eliminates the torque reduction in the normal eco tune that protects the oem tc :D Those with the Eco tune can update very reasonably when they get a better tc :SOMBRERO:

Is that 160 degrees the transmission fluid temperature?

I guess with the Hot tune, you are all set, is the full torque Eco tune really the Hot tune? :?:

I hope not as I like what I have and just want to undo the "save the TC" programming

Joe,
I was referring to the transmission temperature via the new gauge.
Sorry, should have been clearer.
How much did the extended warranty cost?

Rob.

It was clear to me but not to another member :-)r

The Chrysler Gold extended warranty that covers the most items including the egr valve that the others didn't cost $2415 for 7 years and 70k miles. You could choose from about any number of years and miles. The power steering rack is on back order but with this one, my first under it, trip including the rear glass shocks and steering rack, I'll be about even. Then I've still got about 36k miles and 3 years left :jester: The cost was just about 10% of the total out the door cost of the jeep without the warranty :SOMBRERO:
