Post subject:  CEL on, high amps on plugs

For the 3rd time in as many weeks, the CEL has come on. Per the dealer, the first two times had glow plugs 1 & 2 putting out high amps. I suspect this CEL is the same.

My thinking is there is something else going on besides a bad GP. Perhaps a bad GP Controller? Any ideas/thoughts on what may causing this? I'd like it to be fixed right instead of fixing the symptom.

There's been more then a few glow plug harnesses found to be put on wrong where they are reversed. If that's the case for you then it's really glow plugs 3 and 4 that are bad. And it's most likely high resistance and not high amps :| Check for a number one on the harness going to the front glow plug :SOMBRERO:

You can also trace a wire up to the 4:1 connector - pull that and you can measure all 4 glow plugs - to ground - you should have ~ .5 to 1 ohm (note: that's really low make sure your meter can read it) - bad ones are typically 50-100+ ohms.

pull the cap off of the plug you think is bad - remeasure the resistance - it should now be open.

FYI - the GP controller costs about the same as one glow plug - so it should be replaced as soon as you have a second plug die.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. Took it into the dealer yesterday and told them the above mentioned possibilities. They stated they may have gotten a bad batch of GPs. Additionally, they stated they did extensive troubleshooting/testing on the GPs, harness and controller. Time will tell if they fixed it right. I sure hope so!
