Post subject:  Priority Mods in a New CRD ?

I've been scouring the Forum for months before I bought my 2006 CRD Ltd. Priority #1 seems to be replace the muffler, and # 2 looks like a Provent CCV.
Do either of these void the dealer's warranty (don't want to ask the dealer, not that they'd know what a Provent was....)? Primary driving will be in/around Arizona between 1400' and 9000' elevations, with temps between 110+ and -20.
Any additional suggestions?

You're on the money. Neither will void the warranty. They would have to prove that your mod caused the malfunction. A Provent can only help EGR lifespan and replacing the muffler does nothing (as long as you're only working cat-back - leave the cat and everything forward alone).

Another thing is to do an oil change pretty quick (couple thousand miles). Several of us have reported a lot of grit and nastiness in the factory oil.

After that - just drive it!

I replaced my oil @ 5669 miles. No grit or anything in mine. Normal oil change on my part other then the more then recommended 6.4 qrts of oil.

As far as the oil change, take a GOOD look at your coolant surge tank, on all sides and from underneath with the light shining down thru it. If you can see any type of crud coating the bottom, or like in my case, one whole compartment filling up with what looks like black sand - CHANGE YOUR OIL PRONTO!!!! Then also get your cooling system backflushed. And save a sample of the oil and the oil filter and whatever type of crud came out of the cooling system, so you can have it evaluated and documented for possible future warranty claims.

If you can see crud accumulating in the coolant tank, like mine, most likely means they forgot to flush the cooling and the oil system as well, had all kinds of crud in the oil when changed at 900 miles.

As far as oil type, go with 5W40 Mobil 1 TSUV or Rotella T synthetic, helps cut down on the amount sucked thru the CCV prior to getting a Provent installed.

Another mod I'd recommend from recent experience - adding in another fuel filter, ahead of the factory filter, at least 10 micron or smaller. The factory 3 micron filter plugs up REAL fast when you get a bad batch of diesel. Like in it won't run at all.

Tell me more about the fuel filter... Standard type (10 microns) from the local auto parts store? Have a brand/parts #? How often should they be changed? Both or only the aftermarket?

Get a transmission pan/oil filter skid plate if your CRD did not come with the skid plate group. That is priority #1.

OK can we still get a sticky with this info and maybe a link to purchase these items?

Also anyone know where I can get a photo of the complete underside of a KJ? I want to see how the exauhst system runs.

Post subject:  Oil Filter relocation?

is there a viable option for a oil filter relocation kit ? Since it is in a horrible spot for wheeling.

Problem with relocating anything to under hood area is almost impossible because of lack of room. I would recommend the OEM trans skid plate for minor offroading if you are just a hunter that needs to get back into the wood for $40, but for serious off roading and rock climbing I would go with something wider and heaver gage. I did the trans & transfer case skids for my wife's CRD just to protect it from "road gators" and the ocassional curb hopping she might do, other wise ours will most likely never see anything worse then a gravel road.
