Engine Oil?????

Post subject:  Engine Oil?????
So is there anything wrong with plain ol' 15w 40 HD oil in the crd? must i use a synt oil? and does the oil have to be 0w 40? please fill me in with the pros and cons. I change the oil in my cummins and use plain ol 15w 40 and change it around every 3k or so.....I dont think this crd i just got has ever had the oem 0w 40 oil or synth or either.....but not sure. I do have a car fax that shows all the service info until i got it( just this past week) showing all oil changes done at the dealer.......please let me know so i can get the 15w 40 out before it tears something up. thanks guys

There are seven million "oil" threads. Do a search. The quick and easy answer is that you can do whatever you want! Our current president not withstanding this is still a free country! LOL. The engine REQUIRES synthetic oil. IMO if you dont use it your krazie!

I use Amsoil European Engine Oil. Best stuff on the planet IMO.

I'd stick with the manual: 0w40 or 5w40 - synthetic, NEVER conventional.

That or be prepared to run some oil tests....

ok...so iv had some issues using the search in the threads for some reason but it seems as if the oil threads are kill'n folks b/c there are soooooooooooooooooooooo many of them. Im draining out the oil in the morn ASAP and put'n in some ol' synth. My liberty didnt come with a manual and i just assumed that it used the indusrty standard(15w 40) OPSSSS!!!!! So you think my engine is fine? its been in there 600 miles or so and everything seems fine. Regardless a full synth 0w 40 or 5w 40 diesel will go in in the AM. and im going to add my filter magnet just to catch any extra particles.....

Your 100% fine running regular dino 15w40 in your CRD.The lower weight syn stuff is to up the mpg's by about 1-2 mpg's and for easier starts in the cold weather.

really? why do these guys say i would be crazy to? once i pick an oil i want to stay with it to prevent seals from leaking and stuff. and the reason why i went with the weight oil is b/c im in NC and its hot a hell here year round. and......i figured it would help to slow any leaks that might have already started......

If you read your manual and understand english then sure go ahead, why not.... you're a big Cummings owner and if it's good for your Cummins then it surely must be good for the Spaghetti diesel.

The KJ CRD for the US market was rated with 0W-40 oil to ensure good start ability down to -15/-20 F. In Europe VM allows the following oil ratings and viscosity:

CG-4 or higher
5W-30, 5W-40, 5W-50, 10W-30, 10W-40, 10W-50 and 15W-40. The 15W-40 is not recommended below 14 F ambient temp. The cutoff for 10W oils is 5 F and 5W is -4 F. VM suggests synthetic oils for improved start ability.

Whatever you decide, it would be pertinent to obtain oil analysis at every change interval to verify engine wear and oil stability.

Dont listen to him, hes a GASSER driver... LOL. Use synthetic and change it every 5000 miles and youll be good.

I would stick with synthetic oil like the manual suggests. reading what GDE has added here you may be ok with a thicker oil like 10w40. I use Rotella T6 5w40 in the blue bottle it is very easy to get a wal-mart or auto stores. 0w40 is very hard to find, I have only seen it at pep boys for $8 a quart. I can get Rotella for 19.50 a gallon at any wal-mart near me so thats what I use. change synthetic oil every 5000 - 6250 miles and you should be ok.

This is silly. If you use dino you cant safely go beyond 3000 miles before the change. The oil breaks down to quickly. If you use a quality synthetic you can double that. Now your synthetic oil isnt really costing you more AND youre getting way superior lubrication.

In all honesty, it costs about the same in the end and synthetic provides superior lubrication, etc. Why risk it on conventional oil?

I said that you may think about the other oils GDE mentions but I would use a synthetic oil no matter the weight of oil you choose just because it doesn't break down as fast and offeres better lubrication. Also be sure the oil is rated for Diesel engines. Diesel engines produce soot when the fuel is burnt, this soot get in suspension in the oil. The oil for diesel is designed to keep the soot in suspension so it don't settle, build up and can be drained out.

The synthetic oil I use is $4.88 a quart when bought in gallons..... How does that compair to changing dino oil every 3000 miles vs. synthetic every 6000?

Like i stated before.....before you were bang'n your gong :banghead: I stated the my new crd didnt come with a manual..................Sooooooooooooo therefore I will be draining the oil to replace it with Rotella 5w 40 full Synth. Anyone advise otherwise??????????? I live in North Carolina. It dosnt get below 30 F here in the winter and its about 100f in the summer with a humidity index of 1,000,000 % aka your drip'n wet as soon as you walk outside.

So again...........You guy think Full Synth Rotella 5w 40 will be fine?????????

Guys, also just because my truck is almost making 900hp dosnt mean im foolish. I didnt build a truck with this much power by being to total dumba$$...just a semi dumba$$ :pepper: ........But my point is im not a retard. Thats why i started the post. I have seen 100 threads about oil and i have no clue what to run now. Im a new CRD owner and i want the best for my CRD. Im going to switch to a full Synth....Im just try'n to figure out which one. My CRD didnt come with an owners manual and im just ignorant. If the 800 miles with the plain ol' Rotella 15w 40 toasts this little italian diesel then its not worth 2 craps to begin with and i will crush the dang thing at the scrap yard. no sweat.........
