I haven't seen any threads recently regarding the rear axle speed sensor. I'm on my third sensor. While driving a relatively long distance (100-miles) using cruise-control, the brake and ABS lights on the dash light-up. Typically, the cruise disengages, but generally can be re-engaged. The odometer quits tracking.
After the trip, the brake/abs lights will go away, especially if I jiggle the wiring harness/connector into the sensor. It may work fine for months or until the next longer trip. The harness doesn't show any signs of chaffing from the e-brake cable - a common problem area on some KJ's. I've disconnected the connector at the sensor, sprayed the connector contacts and sensor contacts with contact lubricant. Seems to be OK for the moment, but I believe the problem will re-surface. Any ideas/thoughts would be appreciated.

I had a similar problem with my 06, it turned out to be a defective left rear wheel speed sensor. Not sure if the 05's have those or not. It would come and go, taking the cruise with it until had it replaced.

The 05s only have the one sensor in the rear. 3-channel ABS and all.

have you checked the front sensors ? Chafing wire on right front wheel is common problem.

No, I haven't checked the front sensors. Would that also cause the odometer to quit clocking?

Any problem with your three sensors on your '05 or any of the four on an'06 will screw up the digital signal to the BCM and cause the problems you describe. Try jacking up a front wheel, unplug the sensor, connect a volt meter and spin the wheel, you should get a reading. If the plug or wire looks bad or corroded, clean and repair and see if it works. Repeat on other side.

When you are driving... before the lights come on, do you hear/feel any ABS related noise?

I think I do just before the dash lights come on.

The fact that you've gone through 3 is what worries me. I killed one in 5 years (and not under hazardous circumstances). You might want to have someone open up the diff to see if you have any damage in there. The dealership that replaced mine under warranty did a diff inspection to ensure the pickup wasn't damaged, and they said it's standard operating procedure for any sensor that dies before its expected lifetime and doesn't appear physically damaged...which made sense to me.

You may have replaced a couple perfectly good sensors if it's not actually the sensor that's causing the issue.
