i did the elephant hose mod and it seems as if i have alot of blow by. I dont have a catch can and could care less where the stuff goes, but it seems like there is a nice little haze out of the end of the hose. is this normal? I just read a post where our factory dip stick is worng. Is this true? if so what should i go by? whats the proper amount of oil(with filter) No i dont have a manual so please dont tell me to read it like ever other post. |

I don't have the EHM, but I believe that a little smoke out of the end of the hose is normal... I think some folks put an old coke bottle down there to catch most of it? I believe the haze = Crankcase gasses With the dipstick, I believe it depends on the CRD. My understanding is that the "Max" marking is generally way above the 6.4quarts that the engine requires. I know you were changing your oil soon... To be safe, figure out how much oil your filter holds (stock amount or more?), which will allow you to determine exactly how much oil to put in - stock being 6.4 quarts. Then drain the oil completely, replace with the proper amount, and make a marking on the dipstick for the correct level. Somebody please correct me if I'm off here, as I've yet to do this myself.... ![]() |

That sounds like a normal amount of haze for these CRDs. Try to keep your oil level at the middle of the range on the stick. If I fill to the max mark it will burn oil until it's about midway and then pretty much stop. Never goes below min. |

I undid my EHM because of the vapor, especially in cold weather. As long as you disable the EGR, the oil vapor will just flow through your intake without causing any problems. There is limited pooling of oil in my intercooler which is self limiting because of the high airflow through there. I also had to replace both CAC hoses but the new ones are oil proof. If the EGR is still functioning, the soot will combine with the oil and create a terrible amount of thick crap which mucks up the MAP sensor and could conceivably restrict the air flow. I have 80k on the clock since I did the ORM and my MAP sensor is nice and clean. The EHM was just too messy for me. |

My wife got tired of the vapor so I went to a Provent. Collect several ounces of oil/muck between oil changes. |

I have more problems with people trying to "warn me about the hose dangling" than from the EHM itself. The vapor is normal when idling. If your engine oil is overfilled (filled to the max mark on the dipstick) the engine will just work to find its own level... Depositing all that excess on your driveway or in the intake. Once it gets back to its happy level... The drips stop. The vapor itself doesn't seem to contain any oil, once the engine level is happy. |

If the vapor doesn't contain any oil at the proper oil levels, doesn't this negate the need for a Provent or EHM? I'm curious, as most people seem to have a little oil in their aftermarket CCV filter, no matter how much oil they put into the system.... so some must be coming through. |

There is some oil vapor in the crank case ventilation gases. It will condense and drip out with the EMH and show up on the pavement from time to time. If you have a gravel driveway you can use a rake and like majic the spots go away ![]() We routed the EMH hose down into a hole in the formed unibody frame member so the gases are not as visable as if the hose was just dangling straight down. I'm assuming the vapors dispurse into the frame box and come out several other holes down the line. I got tired of hearing the miss's complain about the vapors floating in front of her headlights and concerned citizens asking her if there was an overheat problem. Now...problem solved, less visable vapor and that frame rail will never rust out on that side. Just make sure the hose doesn't dead end on a flat surface. Cut the end on an angle so an ice plug doesn't form not allowing proper ventilation. |

ok...we'll im not to worried about the light haze...i just wanted to make sure it was normal and it was just crank case vent. and not a bunch of blow by. Yes it will haze in front of the head lights at night and people look but they dont know so i just say yep i know. My cummins smokes on idle from my exhaust alone from my oversize injectors....im used to things smoking. |

Crankcase vapor IS blowby. by blow by i mean normal amount, not worn out internals....obviously if it smokes like a train there is a problem...like i have said in many posts, this is my first CRD and im going on 2 weeks with it now and just wanted to see if what i was seeing was normal. |

OK, I'm stumped. In the old days any combustion gasses getting past the rings was called blowby. In my aging, possibly feeble mind I can't imagine how a hole in the valve/rocker cover (whatever it's plumbed into) could possibly be called a crank case vent. Isn't that more toward the bottom of the engine? |

They are connected by passages. That's why when you pour oil into the head it ends up in the oil pan. |
