Does anyone have pros and cons about doing a SVO/WVO conversion on the CRD? I have been to some of the companies websites that say they have converted a CRD to use SVO/WVO.

The only warning I have is that the CRD is a high pressure system. How the SVO/WVO works under the extreme pressure of the Common Rail is a large unknown.

I would wait to do something that drastic for a few more years - until more is known about how the straight oil works in the Common Rail system.

Most of the experience with SVO/WVO systems is in lower pressure diesel engines which could be more tolerant.

It is possible that the CRD would work beautifully for years - but with my $30k at stake I'll let others experiment...

Until then, use Biodiesel.

If you do use WVO make sure you filter the heck out of it. The CRD has much tighter tolerances than say an old Mercades 300. You wouldn't want a french fry crumb clogging up your injector system. ;)

The primary issue that I am aware of is that VO that hasn't been processed into biodiesel contains chemicals that are liable to coke up your injectors or cause problems in the cylinder when it burns. There are people who are using SVO successfully, but if it were me I'd pick an older vehicle with lower injection pressures and no warranty.

$2.70 a gallon will look like peanuts if you end up buying 4 new injectors ($550 each), a new IP and the labor to replace them.

Ranger1 is right about that. Fuel injection system total runs, what, 3-4 grand?

Sorry, guy, but diesel costs what it costs. Your best option is a higher mileage vehicle if you want to save bucks on transportation costs. A bicycle is even better.

Gotta have a car? Absolutely gotta have a 4wd SUV? Then that's what it'll cost to drive it. You already got one of the stingier ones with a gallon o' go-juice. But it is really wasteful of your money to blow a warrantied vehicle with something untested-in-a-common-rail-diesel like an SVO/WVO fuel system. It IS your money to throw away, however, and if you are determined, be our guest, more power to ya, and please do keep us informed on how it goes.

Oh, yeah, BTW and for what it's worth, be advised that just as both gas and diesel are up 30-40 cents over what they were LAST year at this time, _I_ suspect they'll be that much more expensive a year from now. And the year after that, too.

The price sure isn't going to go down...

If you do go with the conversion, remember as well that as veggie oil gets in more demand, and as farmers have to pay more for fuel to grow and ship their product - veggie oil will go up as well. :)

But also - if you do the conversion, be sure to honor the warm-up and cool-down procedures. They are very important, and hard to get used to...

I'll agree w/ the others that I wouldn't do a greasecar conversion on a CRD. Aside from the worries about what SVO will do under rail pressure, there's the issue of smell. I've never seen a greasecar that doesn't reek of old veggie oil. You ALWAYS spill a little here or there and w/ the tank inside it's just gross.

If you're of the greasecar bend, I would invest in a home biodiesel reactor and make biodiesel. It's safer for your car, and the smell stays in your garage :)

There are tons of resources on biodieselnow and tdiclub.

Good luck,

So has anybody done it?
Some claim the glycerine even in SVO will coke up the engine. I'm not about to f%$# a $30K car, I'm just curious.
