Just got the jeep back from the shop. Had it in for a whirring noise from the back, most obvious around 30MPH with accelerator pedal depressed 1/4 to 1/2 way. When I lift off the pedal the sound goes away. I was told I need new pinion bearings $850.00. I have 52K on the Jeep, 05 sport CRD. I change the diff using synthetic every other oil change and tow occasionaly, no off roading.

Anyone have a similar experience?

I was thinking I would like a limited slip diff as I have an open one now. I was going to try to find a used one. Is there a standard ratio for the CRD's? I know the diffs came in 3.55 3.73 & 4.10. Can I use one from a gasser?

Any help is appreciated!

05 had a 7/70 power train warranty. Are you the original owner? If not I believe the waranty is transferable to a second owner for a fee but it may have to be done in a certain amount of time.

No, I am the third. I already tried that. First owner had it for 20K, dad bought for daughter, second owner had it as a third vehicle for 10K, then I got it.

Bummer :( But that sounds like a lot of money. See if there's a transmission/differential shop, not automatic transmissions, in your area and get a quote from them. Your problem has happened before but is not real common.

Drain the full synthetic gear oil out and add some regular old dino 85w-140 and never fear pinion bearing damage again.

It is the synthetic gear oil that is leading to early pinion bearing failures.

I have the Trac-Lok rear end (factory limited slip). I would trade you for your open rear. I'd rather have the open rear so I can upgrade it with a locker later.

To answer your question, all CRDs came with 3.73s from the factory. You can use a gear set from a gasser, but it will have to be one with 3.73s which was optional on the gas KJs.

Why don't you like the LSD? I do not like the open diff in the rain, towing in the rain is even worse. You have to be very gentle on the go pedal.
