So you know what that means!

It's time for mods! The wife's Jeep liberty CRD has already had a nice torque converter, deep pan, and a shift kit installed. So now it's time to address the power side of things besides a open exhaust.

Anyone who has a Jeep liberty knows the one downfall of them. The EGR system. The EGR valve and actuator are prone to failure and not covered under warranty. The first time I had issues with it, I cleaned up the valve and it worked for a month or so. The EGR is a PITA to get at on the jeep. You'll be used to seeing this...

Image

Back when I drilled and tapped the manifold for a pyrometer, I blocked off the EGR passage to the valve. I just used a bolt that I welded a washer on.

Image

It is a little unnerving to do this mod since you have to hack up the harness. But it's not really that bad. You could use splicers, but since we're working with tiny voltages you should solder the connections.

Image

After you get about 10 connections made you're done with the splicing. It's all wired in at the ECM connectors. You'll have a bundle of wires to clean up though once you're done.

Image

After a little dressing and wire loom, it's manageable again.

Image

I went ahead and tested the connections with the bypass plug still plugged in. I went ahead and started the jeep to verify it would still run. All was fine. So I plugged in the SEGR module, then cleared the codes on the ECM with a scan tool. Crossed my fingers and....

Image

Walaa! No more check engine light. :D

Now, let's get some more ponies outta the little tractor. Time to dance with the devil!

Image

I installed the dial on the left dash in this panel. Nice and clean looking, doesn't draw attention like my trucks space shuttle of gauges and buttons!

Image

The little tractor can mooooove now buddy! I'm going to do one more little tweak on the transmission to help bump up the line pressure and she's done!

If you bump up the line pressure, it will be temporary and the TCM will learn around it. I am sure the shops and online stores with boxes of resistors with fancy plugs like the Sonnax will claim otherwise, but they are salesmen who make their living by getting your money, not Gear Heads who practice the Art of Performance enhancement.
If you need a temporary line pressure boost, put in a switch to enable the resistor when you want it and short out the resistor the rest of the time so you don't wear out your trans with excess line pressure when puttzing in heavy slow traffic. One trick that I have thought of but not tried would be to hook up an NC pressure switch that would short out the resistor until you get up to 10PSI of boost and then send the signal through the resistor to provide temporary line pressure boost to get you through the "hole shot".
GMCTD one of our members now on another plane of existence, discussed the switch for the resistor, take a look at his past posts.

Good Luck

Adding the resistor is what I was talking about. I was planning on wiring it with a switch as well. Since tapping the pressurized side of the intake is a pain, and since I'm the only driver that "cleans the cat out". The switch is the best option.

I haven't been on the board much lately. RIP GMCTD. :(

Resistor in Transgo kit is 222ohm 5%.
Red, Red, Red, Gold; for those who did not need to down load the cheat sheet to remember like me.
Shorting out the resistor that will be wired inline with a switch is less work than using a SPDT switch and going through all the extra work. I like simple.
For those who don't believe me look up Ohm's law and do the calculations, :ROTFL: :ROTFL: :ROTFL: :ROTFL: :ROTFL: :ROTFL:

Oh, use your creative fabrication talents to get rid of the flange restriction behind the CAT. Besides the extra pep and better fuel economy, it will only take 2 seconds to properly clean out the CAT (and drop the back pressure to 0.0 PSI) when you are on a expressway entrance ramp. Chears

The factory muffler and flange behind the cat left long ago. I've still got the resistor from the transgo kit in the shop.

I've left the cat functional. If emissions changed, I'd have to have one since it came factory with one. Course I doubt any testing shop would drop the cat to verify it still has it's guts. Since the SEGR is not easily seen and prevent a CEL. They wouldn't notice that either. I might gut it later on. But for now, it holds the soot until I get to blow it out.

Actually when you do a hard acceleration under load, you are doing what the cat was designed to do. After practicing this act of sound ethical environmental stewardship of cleaning out the cat described above, the 0.5PSI restriction is gone for the next time you need full power to get out of the way of a run away 18 wheeler. Make sure you rub it in if you ever have to take an emissions test, they deserve it.
