Has anyone had to replace their cat yet on the CRD?

I have 176K miles on my '06 CRD and I seem to be noticing a good bit more turbo lag than normal. I have the GDE eco-tune. I have a cel due to a glow plug i need replaced so I need to have the codes read to see if any other codes are popping up.

I was thinking about gutting the cat and putting a muffler back on it.

Thoughts?

Open up the exhaust with a free flow 2 1/2" Muffler or straight pipe. Also get rid of the choke point at the back end of the cat. Your cat will clean out real fast on the express way. The stock muffler can create as much as 5PSI of back pressure.

Got a straight pipe on it right now. I will have to look at the back end of the cat to figure out how to free the flow up there.

I will also take a look at the boost hoses to see if I have any leaks.

Thanks for the help.

If your still running that ball coupler that from what i hear is a decent restriction. I think they are cutting the coupler off a few inches after the cat to take out that restriction. I havn't straight piped mine, I have only had it a little over a week. Its going to be happening in the next 3-4 days when i get the time.

You wouldn't happen to have gauges would you? Nows when a boost gauge would come in handy.

You might also have injectors that are worn and no longer delivering the proper amount of fuel, I have seen this before without any codes being present.

ok so my jeep took a dump yesterday afternoon. After driving it all day I stopped to get my hair cut and when I fired the jeep up it was a complete dog. Didn't have much power, was belching black smoke when only putting my foot into it a little. It would get up to speed, I was able to get up to 70 ish and set the cruise but it took a while.

With jeep in park I gave i would idle it up and the motor shakes and sounds like it is missing. You can smell the unburnt diesel. The turbo does not sound like it is spooling up correctly. I checked to see if there is any oil leaking from the turbo and there does not seem to be any leak. I checked both CAC hoses and they are both in good shape. I was not able to get the hose from the airbox to the turbo off to see if the turbo spun freely. It is at the stealership right now to see if they can figure out what is wrong. :furious:

MrMopar64 how would you go about diagnosing the injector problem? I am hoping that since the jeep started running like crap it has thrown a code. Should hear something from the stealership early this afternoon. Any ideas would be appreaciated.

Didn't check for ir in the fuel filter. Have not had that issue since switching to Racor unit. I am confused how air in the fuel filter would lead to black smoke and unburnt diesel. I can see the lack of power and rough running. Please enlighten me. If air in fuel filter could cause all the symptoms I will run over to the stealership right now and check it out.

Thanks for the help.

Can you post all engine codes the dealers record? This will point us in the right direction. The issue sounds more severe...is the engine running on 3 cylinders? you would notice a different vibration one the steering wheel on on the arm rests if a cylinder dropped out. This could point to a glow plug failure...hopefully not. Good Luck!

I don't have a list of codes from the stealership yet but they are saying that the vacuum sulinoid that controls the turbo is not working. They have ordered one and it will be in the shop tomorrow.

GDE - I have not noticed any new vibration in the steering wheel or arm rest. I will get the codes and post them.

Success!!! :pepper: The stealership was correct. The vacuum solinoid for the turbo was the problem. The CRD runs like a champ :JEEPIN: and it only cost me $216 bucks and that included the labor to replace the #3 glow plug.

I checked with the mechanic and the vacuum solinoid taking a crap did not throw a code. The only code was for the #3 glow plug. The mechanic that worked on my jeep does most of the stealerships work on the cummins diesels so he used experience with diesels to trouble shoot the issue.

So if any of you CRD owners start having severe turbo lag that eventually results in a big loss of power and black smoke out the tail pipe you might want to have your mechanic take a look at the vacuum system for the turbo.

That's good news that it's fixed. I'm surprised it didn't throw a turbo underboost code.
