New CRD owner in Central Ohio

Hey all, new guy to the forum. Not new to the Jeep game, but I am new to the diesel world.

My wife and I just bought a 2005 KJ, sport, with a CRD. It has 69K on it. Drove it home from Cleveland (where we bough it) yesterday, used 1/8th of a tank in 130miles! I was pretty happy to see that, and man o man I loooove the diesel power!

Anyhow, what are the common problems, things that need to be fixed, things I need to be on the look out for? I have heard about the rear window problem, so far so good. But as soon as it craps out I'll be buying a fix kit for it. I have read something about the MAP sensor, that I should clean it out. Anything else to it, what should I clean it with, WD-40?

I think that is it for now, and TIA for all the help I'm sure I'll get from here.

Welcome.

I'm in Grandview Heights. There are many threads on cleaning the MAP. I sugest you read some of them. (don't use WD40)

It was my front windows I had problems with and the fix that Crown Jeep preformed under warranty was to replace the glass, seals and everything else related to the window. And for no extra charge they scratched the painton the driver's door and dented the left rear door they didn't even need to work on :cry:

I don't know where in in "Central Ohio" you are but if you want to use Bio we only have a few sources. The fuel Depot in Deleware has good B20 and recently a BP Commercial has opened up on E. 5th Avenue just east of Joyce avenue. They Have B-5, 10 and 20. The Meijor store south of Grove city has B5 too.

HA! No lifting it just yet, my wife and I are moving to Northern CA in August (and we got this jeep to help with the move so i can tow a uhual trailer rather than rent a truck) so I can go to culinary school. Once school is done and I'm making some $$, you bet this mall crawler is getting jacked!

I will try to post some pictures later today once I take a few.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new to you CRD! you will find tons of information here.

I just got my CRD last summer, it is my first Jeep and first Diesel. I love the power too, the fuel ecomony is not too bad either for a vehicle of this size weight and capibility. Towing to Cali should go well for you.

As far as first things you may want to do clean the MAP sensor, thats easy there are post on that in the tech section. You may want to change most of the filters you can get to easily. before that Trip to Califorina I would change the air filter, the Amsoil one seems to work well, stay away from K&N. Change the Fuel Filter, you can get those at NAPA where I live Joe may know some other Places in Ohio where you are. THere is a few writeups on changing that too in the tech section, again not hard to do the only special tool I needed was a filter wrench..which is hardly special. The other mod that is easy most owners here do is the fumoto valve to replace the oil drain plug..... the stock drain plug takes a allen wrench (8mm I think) and the threads are known to be stripped easily. using the valve means no more risk of stripping it and easier DIY oil changes.

Turbo Tim just had an Emissions Test he passed with flying colors (read the post) with the EGR that was shut off. Several ways to do it, just do it.
Lift pump, good idea, cheap insurance against air leaks and their annoying and can be expensive to repair consequences. I went the cheap way and it still works great.
Open up the restrictive flange on the converter and go with 2 1/2" exhaust.

Hi sam, thanks for steering me over here from Jeepin, def the place to be if you have a KJ, esp a CRD.

I did the ORM, and the EHM today, along with cleaning my MAP. Holy crap that thing was caked up. I'm excited to see what my MPGs will be now that I have done a few things to it. I got 419 on my last tank, and I'm wanting to break into the 500 club.

Anyhow, here is a pic of my MAP all caked up, I'm glad to have it looking like it should now.

Yup, the ORM and a cleaned MAP will make a difference.

Without the EGR you wont get the soot in the intake, and without the EHM you won't get the oily vapors in the intake for the soot to bind to.

Next I would recommend changing the fuel filter, if you don't know when it was done last then it would be a good idea to change it.

I was having problems with stalling that got progressively worse over 1000 miles while on a road trip, I was thinking air in fuel, turns out it was a badly clogged fuel filter. In my mind I replaced it pretty recently, turns out it had been 50k miles since it was replaced.

The fuel filter is next on the list, I'm looking forward to getting the jeep in tip top shape. I'm thinking an exhaust system or a GDE ECU flash will need to happen shortly after I sell my old car, anyone looking to buy a 2001 Stratus R/T with 127k on it?

Nice work! my MAP was that dirty when I cleaned mine too..... maybe evena bit more caked up. For me I think I started to get 1-2 MPG better around town that I noticed when I calculated by hand and on the EVIC. I throttle responce seemed a bit better too.

Again Welcome to LOST. I have to say if I had not found LOST I may never have had gotten the confidence to buy a CRD and feel like I can maintain it to the same extent I did with gassers i used to drive. If not for LOST I would have bought a gas Liberty, a V6 Toyota RAV4 or kept my Outback longer.

1) A lift pump is basically a low pressure inline fuel pump, right? And can someone give me a link to a good write up.
2) If I get a GDE tune, do I need to do a SEGR? I want to say no, but I'm not 100% sure on this stuff.

I'm asking these questions right now because these are the top two mods/improvements on my Jeep list.

There are as many ways to add a lift pump as there are people doing it :lol:

Before it was discovered by GMCTD that a Dodge/Cummins pump fit right in there were many posts on different installs.
The cleanest, takes the most time and most costly (mine was $154 as I remember) is to put a Cummins/Dodge pump in the tank

The quickest and least expensive (under $50 at NAPA) is to mount a Fauct pump by the fuel head held on my wire ties :mrgreen:

Read through the tech section and decide what's right for you :SOMBRERO:

I suggest that if your going for an external pump that you eliminate the plastic quick connect fitting on the supply line from the tank. I suspect that's where my air leak was. They were designed and used for a gasoline pressure system and not our vacuum system. The basket in the tank has regular hose barbs terminating on the outside top of the tank with short sections of hose terminating in the plastic fittings. So if you went from the tank with a hose to the steel line going forward cutting off the plastic part you should be good to go.
