Besides continually replacing EGR or FCV, what long term problems arise in the CRDs for those owner who haven't discovered bypassing the EGR with a ORM or SEGR. The intake will be clogged? I ask soley because I am looking at buying a used one. |

You can disable EGR with a ECU Flash (See Green Diesel Engineering posts or their website). The other things that soot can do is clog up your MAP sensor (aka Boost COntrol Sensor) which sits in the top of the intake body. When soot and oil mist (from the CCV gas recycling system) mix in the intake body they create a black goo that coats everything. THe sensor can be cleaned, but the goo will be on the insisde of the intake body forever (unless you pull the intake body and clean it - not an easy job). Start with the things that can be done to stop it building up: 1. Put a Provent on it to get rid of the oil going into the hoses, intercooler and intake body. 2. Load GDE's ECO tune on the ECU to turn off the soot and generally improve drivability and economy. 3. Over time you can replace the turbo hoses with Samco silicon ones, and clean out the intercooler. but that's just my opinion. |

I've personally seen (and cleaned) what can happen on a VW TDI in 60k miles  A few years ago a lost LOST member was going to have a firm dizel toys (sp?) as I recall transplant a crd engine into another vehicle. It had about 60k on it and they inspected the intake and found it pretty clogged

I believe the oil (or heat?) will, over time, dissolve much of the soot once you disable the EGR. |

I have over 70,000 miles now and am still getting the same MPG as I got on day one. Since ULSD came out, I don't have to clean the MAP any more. CAC hose doesn't sweat since I put on the new one 55,000 miles ago. I wouldn't worry about the sky falling. Just enjoy the ride. |

BVCRD: have you done anything to bypass your EGR? stoutdog: I was hoping that would happen, I know a lot gets cleaned out, I just am not sure if any damage could occur after 50k+ on a used vehicle that would be hard/expensive to fix. |

Go for as low mileage as possible if buying from a dealer, or if buying from a LOST member, question them closely about what, if anything, they have done about the EGR/ oil from crankcase problem. If you cannot verify that the EGR has been disabled for multiple thousands of miles, my suggestion would be to do the ORM immediately upon purchase, but leave off doing the EHM or Provent for a while. Yes, the oil compromises the boost hoses, but it will also slowly act as a solvent to "clean" the intake over time. Do some hard acceleration runs over two oil change intervals (OCI's) and you should have a relatively clean intake. |

Listen to what linewarbr said, I agree with him completely. Long term damage may be a concern, but there are plenty of CRDs for sale on here that have had the EGR disabled for a long time. There are also plenty available on cars.com or autotrader.com that have low mileage. I got mine with 26k miles last summer and put 8k EGR free miles on since then... You just have to be willing to drive a little bit, as mine was about six hours away. |

Good tip, makes perfect sense to drive without the EHM to help clean! And yes, driving a ways will be about the only way. I am planning a nice road trip when I get home! |
