I drive a nearby mountain pass often. Sometimes I forget to click it out of overdrive until after I top out and am coasting down the other side. When I do, there is a long hesitation and then it 'clunks' into direct drive.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

This is normal (for me at least) and i would not worry about it.

However I would like to simply add that the break pedal is the cheapest pedal to press on any vehicle.

As easy and as inexpensive to operate as the break system is, there really is no benefit to down shift on a downhill grade, during a normal commute.
