hi, I currenly own a 2006 Liberty Renegade, and I am looking at a 2006 Liberty CRD, But don't know much about them. My mechanic warned against problems finding parts and too many repairs. Anyone with some advice? It has 50,000 miles and has had the recall work done.

Are you comfortable working on it?
They have some issues the factory didn't fix and the owner has too
and overwhelmingly from day one the biggest problem has been lack of trained maintenance techs.

if you have to pay someone else to troubleshoot - it can get really expensive - if you're comfortable turning wrenches - there's a lot of good information here.

My husband is somewhat comfortable, is most of the work reatively easy to figure out? Also, it was made late in '06, and I've heard that could be a good thing, but don't know too much. Are parts tough to find? It's in beautiful condition, runs great, they're asking 17200, any thoughts? Thanks for any input!

I was one of the first people to ever own a Liberty CRD here in the U.S. And I'm on my second one now. And I'm a lifelong fan of diesel engines.

Having said that...I have to be honest with you. The Liberty CRD IS more expensive to own than the gas version you have now. I've had this one for 6 months now and I've spent around $2,000 just to get it to be dependable. Last night I ordered a new thermostat because mine is apparently dying. That was $98 bucks...when it would have been $9 bucks for the gas version. CAC hoses, EGR issues, torque converters, brake problems, U-joints, on and on and on. Not to mention that the oil costs more (if you can even find the 0W40 it really calls for), fuel filters cost more, transmission filters cost more, etc. In addition to all that....my wife very much dislikes the "heavy" feel compared to gas. Her gas KJ honestly did have a feathery feeling in the steering. The CRD feels heavy.

So the moral of the story is...the CRD is NOT for everyone. You have to understand that owning a CRD is like being married. You have to cope with all the bad stuff in order to enjoy the good stuff.

As a counterpoint to LibertyCRD, I will say that there are others of us on this board that have spent little if any money on abnormal maintenance. Personally, in over a year of ownership, I've only "had" to spend $100 on a broken window regulator.... everything else has been done by choice. Meanwhile the fuel savings alone (after a few tweaks, I average 29-30 mpg in mostly hwy driving), more than makes up for the slightly higher costs for certain filters/fluids (a couple bucks, if that).

IMO, all of the "must do" preventative mods can be completed for just a couple hundred extra bucks... Although tunes, etc., are serious options to consider at a later date.

Parts are readily available both used and online. For your husband, bookmark http://www.moparonlineparts.com and http://www.moparpartsamerica.com

You say they are asking 17200. Is this a limited? What kind of mileage? Does it have a service record? As a point of reference, I purchased my Limited CRD last summer for 16k, with only 26k miles.

If it's been well maintained - the only fixes I'd immediately recommend is a Provent to stop Oil from blowing into the intake (Chrysler design feature) - and then ordering a new style fuel head so that at the first hit of air-in-fuel problems you can change it out. (~$100 & includes filter)

Parts are available on the internet - and occasionally at local stores (the counter guys generally haven't heard of a Diesel - but it's on the computer and they'll find out they do have it)

if it has 50,000 miles odds are the CAC hoses were changed under warranty and the new ones are pretty good. (if you can get the service history it would be a good thing)

The ujoint /ball joint / brake / window regulator issues are the same as gas versions.

(your husband needs to read through some of the LOST tech threads)
17200 does sound high - but that's a local area thing

First of all, they need to knock $5000 off the price.

True. At that price, you are getting dangerously close to new SUV territory. With all the incentives going on right now, you could probably get a new SUV the same size as the KJ for the same monthly payment as what you'll have on that KJ CRD. $17,200 is a bit steep.

Thanks everyone for the helpful tips. I returned the CRD to the dealership today, and got my gas Liberty back. It did feel a lot lighter! Thanks again for all the helpful feedback!
