Ok. Bone stock '06 CRD. 50K miles. All services have been done, recalls too. Mostly a work tripper with the occasional boat (3500 lb) tow.

What would you do next? From what I have read on this board, the initial must do-s:

1. GRE Tune (Hot?) ($500)
2. Exhaust work (muffler and pipe following cat.) ($200)

Anything else on the critical end? New to diesels but got a great shade tree and can turn a wrench ok.

3) Change CAC hoses
4) Clean MAP
5) Replace fuel filter head
6) Consider TCM tune

clean map
change fuel filter and if not updated oem fuel head already then change head + oil and filter change
ORM mod untill you think about a tune
Check and replace CAC hose if needed... OEM or Samco

A provent CCV filter or elephant hose mod.

1. GDE tune (ECO or HOT either one)
2. EHM (search the forum for the simple how-to)
3. Euro TC

That will pretty much give you a bulletproof and dependable Jeep. In my opinion, exhaust and things like that should fall way down low on the priority list. The improvement is little if any from my experience with two CRDs compared to the cost/work involved.

For basic maintenance, you will want to closely watch your CAC hoses, and your U-joints in the rear shaft. Upgrade the U-joints to greasable ones when the time comes...and normally it comes fast on these jeeps.

It looks like you are pretty well covered here with the basics, if you like to drive your Jeep. If you like alot of under hood time, follow the rest of the posts. And like Joe R. said, "Normal Maintenance."

Great stuff. I can't wait to pick it up! Going to make a drive from AR to FL. I will watch the gas milage and let you all know how she does.

1. Oil Change ASAP: Its probalby got jiffy lube non-diesel oil in it or 15w-40. Shell Rotella 5w-40 or Mobil 1 5w40 are all you need. Don't use 0w-40 per manual mobil 1...its not a good diesel oil.

1a. Air Filter Change ASAP: Change airfilter twice as often as recommenced in manual....rational: its a gasser air filter and our diesels suck more air and my local dealerships have had several blown engines from drivers (clueless ones) not replacing airfilters frequently enough and they get clogged real good.

2. Provent Filter ASAP.

3. Fuel pump in tank or in line....there is a noticeable difference in how quicly an engine starts between the two in warm and cold weather. I figure less wear and tear in CP3 with it meaning longer life.

4. Racor Fuel Head: OEM one has issue with airleaks, and heater element in it has been linked to engine bay fires.

5. GDE eco tune. A hot tune requires torque convertor replacemnet. An eco tune is fine on stock OEM torque convertor. Get them to disable check engine light for the air flow control valve which will fail if it hasn't already. EGR life greatly extended with this tune.

6. Diff fluid replacement. Probably not yet done.

I would install a provent first before anything else.

Just drive it and enjoy it. Nothing is needed at 50K. Oh, you might check the condition of the MAP sensor, but as I have found out, it stays clean since the indroduction of ULSD. All the other mentions are just preventatives (maybe).

Does the EHM through the CEL? The mod looks easy enough to do before the trip.

The EHM does not throw a CEL... It does have the tendency to smell, smoke, and leak oil on your driveway, though. IMHO, it's an unnecessary mod.

Mine doesn't smell, smoke or leak on my driveway. There is some mist that is noticeable ONLY at certain times (such as a very calm wind day while sitting in a drive-thru) but it's a non-issue. IF you have leaking on your driveway, then that's all the more reason why the EHM is a necessary mod.

Im with everyone else.

1. Change oil and filter along with air filter. Amsoil European Diesel Oil. Amsoil EA034 oil filter. Amsoil EAA201 air filter.
2. Clean MAP
3. Unplug your MAF (this equals Off Road Mod ((ORM))
4. Get a Provent OR a GDE Eco/Hot tune OR elephant hose.
5. Check to see if your fuel filter head has had the recall. If not do it, if so change the filter.

GDE doesn't address the same issues as the Provent/EMH. You should put GDE up with the ORM/SEGR option.

GDE don't keep oily CCV vapors out of the intake EHM or provent like I have does. GDE tune does do many other good things.

IF the fuel head is not the upgraded one then change that to the upgraded part...still leave the heater unpluged, its not needed in warm weather at all and not needed in winter unless its very cold IMHO. I just unplugged mine and plan not to connect it untill winter. the fuel head comes with a new filter and is far cheaper than the Racor set up. you can get filters at Napa...my local Napa keeps them in stock or order from Rock Auto.

Unplug MAF causes CEL but I ignore it. I do feel like I need to plug it back in every few months to see if there are no other codes.

change the oil if you don't know when and what is in there. as others said use a good diesel oil. My preference is Shell Rotella T6 5w40 in the blue bottles. I get mine at Wal-Mart by the gallon for $19.50 Any good quality filter brand is fine but most here hate Fram.... I use Napa Gold

OH air filter... change that if its not clean looking. the Amsoil Eaa one is nice... you can knock dirt out every oil change an vacuum it out then put it back in for like 4-5 years.

Post subject:  Re: New CRD: What would you do?

Drive it and enjoy it. I have 94K miles, wheeled it form coast to coast in all terrain in all weather conditions. Outside of keeping the fluids fresh and rotating the tires... it's all good. Mine was also a rental before I got it. No bypasses or tunes required.

While I admire their passion, many on here make CRD life far more complicated than it needs to be.
