My Jeep popped a P1265 code after leaving it at a 4x4 shop to have a DTT installed in the rear axle. The cylinder #3 glow plug ohmed at 200 ohms, so I knew it was gone. I had to remove the intake elbow to get to it, which is a real pain. The good part is that I had a reason to clean out the accumulated gunk from the intake elbow. There was about 1/4" thick all over the inside of it, the consistency of fresh asphalt.

Some engine degreaser and a wire brush got it clean. The glow plug was $30 shipped from Rock Auto - the cheapest I found. I got a spare. I think starting the Jeep and moving it, then shutting it off right away is what blows the plugs. This is the third one on this engine. There was a faint crack visible in the tip of the plug.

I've been running the EHM since 9,000 mi, and the ORM since 19,000. All that junk accumulated in that time. The jeep has 47,000 on it now. I shudder to think what some people's intakes look like who've been running 75,000+ with the stock system. I reached up into the intake plenum to get out what I could from there. The good news is that the volume of the plenum is so large I don't think the buildup was as bad. The intake air enters vertically up and hits the roof of the plenum, where the thickest deposit was. Other than that I don't think it's as bad as the elbow.

Makes you wonder what the intercooler might look like?

So covered in sooty diesel oil, just like my heart?

Or like the black plaque,
working on giving me a heart attack?

Mine has micro thin coating of oil, detergent in oil is dissolving left over EGR gunk.

CATCRD - Hopefully I can resurrect this thread. My CDR just threw this code. The dealer says they'll take the vehicle and fix it - but won't order the part until they put it on their reader and confirm... So I either have to drive to the dealer and drop off the vehicle (which will take probably 2 hours) only to find it'll have to sit there 5-7 days (or I get to drive back 2 hours and pick it up). I used to routinely replace glow plugs on my VW TDI, but this engine looks to be a bit more complicated. How long do you estimate it took to do the swap? If I'm moderately handy with tools, do you think it'd be possible? I have the FCM (but it doesn't discuss glow plug replacement with much detail). Any help (or encouragement) would be appreciated!

Things has changed, now you will need the updated set of glow plugs, controller and ECM flash.

Upon further research, it appears the TSB 08-005-11 applies... I'm under the 7/70K warranty, so perhaps I'll luck out. Dealer is researching it for me now. He still is saying he won't order parts before seeing the vehicle (seems like the TSB would authorize it). Thanks for the rapid reply.

I don't have a GP code just difficult starting when cold and also have a 7/70 warranty. I called my dealer and he said this about the TSB.
"It says if there's one bad glow plug all 4 along with the GPC module must be replaced and the ECM flashed"

It does NOT "Authorize" anything :furious:
Mybe in better days gone by it would have meant replace them but not now.

But since you have a code and warranty left other then a $100 deductable and waiting for parts yours would be replaced.
It's their game and their rules. The catch is my Chrysler warranty has a $100 deductable PER VISIT :juggle:
That means take it in and have the code scanned $100
At that point if I leave and come back when the parts arrive it will be ANOTHER VISIT AND ANOTHER $100 :dizzy:
So under the terms of the warranty I/you have to leave it or pay the deductable twice :banghead:

Based on the service manager's reticence to authorize the TSB work (before seeing the vehicle), I'm inclined to believe that's the reason. Why get one deductible when you can get two! We'll see - he's supposed to call me back. Is that a pig I see in the sky?

When I took mine in last week the dealer diagnosed a failing turbo... since the unit is currently unavailable (they're saying 2-4 weeks out) they ordered the parts for the turbo, performed all the other warranty work, and listed the back-ordered parts on another line item (leaking fuel air/water separator). Service writer specifically said they did it this way so I WOULDN'T have to pay a second deductible when the turbo comes in.

I've had this exact experience with the same dealer before (diagnosis --> $100 deductible --> parts ordered --> work performed later with no second deductible)... tranny cooler hoses, disc changer/radio, and several others...

He also said that since the turbo was already diagnosed - the work would still be covered by Warranty even if it's expired when the parts come in. I've got the 100k Maximum Care plan with an expiration date of 4/4/2011, and my odometer is currently at 99,200.

Needless to say - even though they tell me it's OK to continue driving I have no interest in driving around an un-warrantied time bomb whose turbo could grenade at any moment. :dead: I'm gonna wait this one out, and use the time to do the water pump, timing belt, etc, etc....
