When I turn the key it cranks over one or two times then the starter just wheezes.

Is this a sign of a dying battery, bad starter, or bad relay?

The FSM says 1) starter ring gear faulty 2) starter motor faulty. I would have guessed the solenoid drive.

At any rate it does sound like it's time for a new starter.

Ya your starter is just missing contact with the flywheel so its just free spinning making the wiz... time for a new one or a rebuild would be cheaper

How many miles did the replaced starter have on it?

Have your battery load tested first :SOMBRERO: It's free at a parts store and may end up saving some coins :D

I've been suspecting the battery since last winter. But those long cranks could have hurt the starter also.

This is getting expensive. In the space of a month I've shelled out $250 for a rear driveshaft, $45 to fix the tire pressure monitor, $225 for two new glow plugs, now I'm not sure it'll start when I want it to.

$365 later I have a new starter. It sounds different than the old one, even new. Much higher pitch and the engine turns right over. Maybe my battery isn't on it's last legs.
