Whasup Guys, im new to the forum and had a few questions. Im in the market for a 2006 liberty diesel.. I have wanted one for some time but never laid the cash out to get one. I love diesels. Performing maint. on diesel engines are not a problem for me. My questions are things i need to look for in buying the liberty CRD. Ive read plenty of forums on all the problems several of these have had. Most sound like to me not hard to fix yourself. I know when i get one i would like to put the GDE Eco Tune, the way it reads it helps with the EGR malfunctions. Also i read in some of your forums about a EGR block kit offered by one of your members. What other mods and such would be helpful to make this vehicle a million mile ride?
Thanks

The eco tune eliminates the need for any other egr solutions  They do use the egr for one small function and that's to bleed off boost when you let off before the turbo can respond

First - get something for the CCV system - it dumps oil into the intake - either Provent or EHM
Second - check the fuel head - the plug on the right is the heater - if it shows any sign of leaking - get either a new style fuel head - or adapt a Racor.

somewhere in there - read LOST - it already has lots of answers & fixes.

There are a couple of issues that are correctable.

First issue is the fuel management head - original was prone to develop air leaks and need constant priming. The design has been revised and many had it replaced under warranty. The new part number fixes the issue. If you buy used from a dealer make them replace this.

The Torque converter for both years was replaced under recall. At the same time they re-flashed the TCM to change the shift points and reduce torque slightly. I don't notice the difference much but some owners were peeved by the reduction. There is at least one vendor that will reverse this for you. Fairly popular to replace the std TC with the model from the export Wrangler Diesel or the after market Suncoast TC

The lower ball joints were replaced on recall. popular upgrade is the Moog greasables.

Lots of owners had problems with EGR valves failing. mine was replaced under warranty then I fixed the issue permanently. An operating EGR will foul the MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor, less now that we have low sulfur fuel. Inspection every once in a while is recommended. Definitely before you buy.

That's about it for what to look for.

Some other popular mods:
-Remove the muffler or replace with glass-pack for less restrictive exhaust. Some have removed the restriction on the downstream end of the CAT as well.
-ECM programming - at least two companies will optimize engine operation for performance or fuel economy
-Lift pump - not strictly necessary, but the injection pump sucks fuel from the tank through the fuel head. Most diesels using the CP3 injection pump have an in-tank lift pump to supply fuel at 3-4 psi instead of suction. Jeep contemplated a lift pump because the wiring, relay and fuse are already there, just the pump is missing.

Main differences between 2005 and 2006:
2005 have ABS with wheel sensors on front and a speed sensor on the rear diff
2006 have ABS on all 4 wheels - to facilitate Traction Control

The Torque converter for both years was replaced under recall. [snip] [quote]

Actually that's not completly true and I'm just trying to keep prospective new owners from getting the wrong information :juggle:
A better statement is "Those made before November 05 had the Torque Converter replaced and both TCM and ECM (yes, two seperate computers) reflashed and those made from November 05 and onward just got the flash".
Pre 11/05 got the same torque converter as the 11/05 and onwards 06 model ones came with. Additionally some of those early ones got the later redesigned transmission pump if the tech could hear a noise coming from the Torque converter. As far as the flash goes the biggest complaint is from those who drive a lot on roads with a 60 MPH speed limit. Going by the Speedometer (that is wrong by the way) the original transmission programming shifted into 5th at 59 MPH and after it shifts at 64 again by the speedometer. Even taking in account the speedometer error the later shifting would mean going over 60 true MPH slightly. It also on a gentle start from a stop it revs to around 2400. Previously it was around 2000 or less. Both of these casued it to use more fuel :D It was all to cure a shudder.

EDIT I forgot to mention and this might be worth while. Find out if the original owner bought a extended warranty and if so can it be transfered to you, if so there will be a charge. I think this is for second owners only and more and more CRD's are on their third or more owners. The Chrysler Gold warranty was available in varying years and miles depending on what you wanted to pay for. I bought a 7 year 70k miles.
