Just wondering How many of you have the TCM tune and are still using the stock non euro TC?

I'm trying to decide what i want. I'm starting to HATE how high the Revs are in the 35-45 mph zones. Are any running the TCM tune with a stock ECM tune?

Edit: what about the guys running shift kits? how does that change the TC locked shifts?

The TCM tune would save me 150 over the ECO tune. But i'm not sure what i want to do.

It will be a while before i purchase either, just thought of it and figured i would ask.

Part 2

With my powerstroke i have a manual TC lock switch. Have any of you ever tried doing this?

I'm running the TCM and Eco tunes with the stock TC. Works just fine. There is a slight droning in the 35-40mph range, but it just sounds like a little extra bass on the radio. And, as mentioned in another thread, I've lost a little bit of my coasting ability in the 35-45mph range as well, but, according to one of the GDE's testers, being in lockup = better mpg than coasting. We shall see...

Edit: If you are torn between the ECM or TCM tune, I would recommend the ECM tune first. I saw a 4-5mpg boost there, on top of all the other benefits, and I doubt the TCM tune will result in that much of a difference (unless you do close to 100% of your driving in town).

Thanks for your input. I was leaning towards the eco tune, just because of everyone saying the MPG gain most have recieved, and if it really is lowering EGT's like a few have stated that they noticed then it has to be burning more efficiently=less fuel.

I do most of my driving on back country roads (live there) or on secondary roads with some turns. The thing i hate the most is when i'm going 40-45 behind a semi on the secondary road i'm never locked and most of the times the truck never goes fast enough for me to hit lockup. So i'll either have to turn OD off and turn more rpm's to be locked or suffer and let it not locked in 4th. I car pool to work 39mi one way 9 miles of that is driving through 2 towns that have 40mph speed limits, again i run into the problem of not being locked unless i speed but then i catch up to a car and run into the semi truck problem again. Atleast i only drive 1 week out of every 5. I just wish i could manually lock the TC like i do on my f250.

Well, for those kinds of driving conditions, I would definitely recommend the TCM tune, as well. It's absolutely wonderful when you can stay in 5th OD through construction zones and traffic slowdowns... no more locking and unlocking over and over.

Hey Mustang,

Where did you get the TC "lock switch" for your PSD? (I have a 7.3 Excursion.)

Thanks,

All you do is buy a decent quality toggle switch and splice it into the TC lock wire that goes from your PCM to the trans ( I don't remember the color combo of the wire, and i'm not sure if it would be different for the excursion or not)

Works like this.

I used one of those crimp splice connectors (the one with the anti water slimy stuff) Ran the wire from the splice connector to the toggle switch and wired the other end of the toggle to a ground. Then when you flip the switch it grounds out the wire (just like the PCM does) and activates the lock on the TC. Now doing it this way you allow the PCM to still controll it when the switch is off, but Since it monitors the speeds in the transmission it knows the TC is locked and should not be so the O/D button light will flash as a warning that somthing is wrong. Thats just because the TC is locked and the PCM didn't tell it to be. So if your going along and lock it manually a few seconds later the light will flash, if you unlock it manually after the light has been flashing it takes a few shifts for the PCM to realize that its still commanding whats going on and the light will stop flashing. Its a very simple mod, and there are many ways to go about it by wiring it so you have a LED lit when its on, or building a small circuit that fools the PCM into thinking its calling the shots so the O/D light won't flash. I'm a simple kinda guy so i just put a switch and no fancy stuff I figured I can deal with the flashing light. You might be able to find more about it on powerstrokenation.com or on ford-trucks.com I will see if i can dig anything up on it, i know the wire i tapped was on the harness right under the brake mastercylinder.

Oh yeah, you MUST unlock it when coming to a stop sign or it will stall. Its just like driving a standard when its locked. And you may or may not look like a fool when you stall your truck at a red light in the turning lane... :ROTFL: Not that i have done that or anything lol :) its a real bear when your running the first gen swamps gear style HPOP and the starter speed isn't enough to build the pressure for the injectors to fire due to the thinner oil when its hot and you have to jump out and give it a shot of spray to get it going.

I have the Hot Tune. I love it. Shifting is unbelievable and smooth. You dont even know that thing is shifting other than watching the tach. If you want the power it is write there for you. Im glad I upgraded to the Euro TC. I notice a difference between the two. When my buddy first bought it stock, personally I thought it was a DOG. I did not have the heart to tell him what I was really thinking. I also had the opportunity to experience the "Shudder" that everyone talks about. With the upgrades it is a whole different animal. You would not be dissapointed by upgrading. Also, Keith and the boys at GDE are wonderful to work with.
