Post subject:  Switching parts from 05 KJ gasser to 06 KJ CRD

I am considering upgrading my ride from a 2005 Liberty Limited to a 06 CRD Liberty Limited, but I have a lot of money tied up in mods. I am considering buying the CRD, then moving most of my mods over to the CRD. I know most things will change over, but I am concerned about specific items.

1-ARB Bumper: I have seen versions for sale for gas and diesel. I can't imagine any difference.

2-Axles. This is as big one. I currently have the stock axles, with a 4.10 diff front and rear along with ARB Air lockers. I just want to take the front pumpkin and entire rear axle and swap them for the stock ones on the CRD. Any issues here? Will it just be less work to remove the ARBs and reinstall them on the CRD?

3-I have a Fastman TB that I am assuming will not work on the diesel, though I know nothing about the CRD or any diesel for that matter.

4-I have some JBA Shorties that I will also assume will not work on the CRD.

5-Excessive Amperage 225 AMP alternator. Do the vehicles use the same type? I know the amp is probably different, but will my EA alt bolt onto the CRD?

I've done some research on this and my answers are vague for the questions asked. Any clarification would be appreciated.

I have over $25k in my Libby and need to strip about $15k off her and sell the leftover version. :)

No differences - bolt it on

Its more work to swap the lockers than to swap the axles.

Don't know what a Fastman TB is or a JBA shortie is either so can't help you there.

Not sure about the ALT, but you should be able to call the mfg and see if its suitable for the CRD application.

Anything JBA should be left behind. everythnge else should be OK except for the things that I have no idea about. Congrats on upgrading away from spark infestation.

2, 3, and 4 won't work. The CRD front end is different, and the ratios are also different on the ring and pinions.

#1--will switch over with no issue,no difference for gas or CRD,only difference is for the years but the '05 and '06 use the same ARB bumper.

#2--The front will swap with zero issue,though you need to use the CRD CV axles as the gas CV's will not work(to long on the driverside).JL has my front diff from my gas KJ installed in his CRD with no issues.The rear axle will not work due to ESP being standard in the '06,just swap the ARB and 4.10 gears in the '06 axle.If you have the Yukon axles for the 8.25 they will not work in the '06 8.25 also due to ESP,different setup for the ABS.

With all of the extra CRD Torque, why would you want to go with 4.10s???
Get a strong tune (we all like to debate options), you will have even more torque.
Pulling the ECM send it to one of three tuners, put it back in, you have more torque with out swapping axles.
Instead swap out the stock torque converter.
Cheapest option is the Euro.
The other two options are SunCoast or Precision Industries.
I swapped mine for a SunCoast so I can do heavy duty towing and like the smoother running with less vibration.
The other get more torque trick is to get rid of the Stock muffler (5PSI back pressure) and the 2 1/8" ID restrictor flange at the rear of the cat, your turbo will show its' appreciation with more boost.
Options are Straight pipe, Magnaflow or Flowmaster. I went with a Stainless Steel Magnaflow because of the Salt on the roads and occasional cops who don't like straight pipes if they bend over and look under your Jeep, not that you need one with the turbo.

Thanks for all the great input and options gents. Based on your input, it will be a major PITA and likely a waste of money to conduct this switch. I have my Jeep close to where I want it, though the torque and economy are lacking more than I would like. I would need to sell it for a hefty price tag (~$18k) and still take off all the non-drive related components to make this a viable option.

06 CRD - $15k
Lift - $1k-3k
Lockers and air system installed - $2800
Chip/tune - $500
Wheels/tires - $1200

Then I could switch my bumper, winch, sliders, armor, lights, power inverter, stereo, horns, and a few other small things.

That leaves an 05 Liberty Limited with 51k miles, Moab wheels and tires, Frankie Lift, 4.10 gears, ARB front and rear, Viar 400c 2.5 Gal air tank and compressor, MBRP exhaust, JBA headers, Fastman throttle body, Excessive Amperage 225A alternator. I might be able to squeeze $18k out of that, but then I'm still out around $3k for the swap even though I will get new lift components (less than 10k on my current one) and new wheels and tires. And many, many weekends over the summer to make it happen.

Good luck trying to anywhere close to $18k for your '05.About $10k-$12k is more reasonable for a private sale,about 1/2 of that on a trade in since it is modified and can no longer be warrantied.

Yep, don't I know it. Perhaps there will be someone who would like to buy it for around $14-15k with the lift, gears, lockers and tires/wheels. Niche market and all...

I have Motive 4.10 gears. Does the CRD not already have 4.10 gears in it? If that is the case, can't I just swap the front diff and then move the ARB from one rear to the next? Wouldn't that work?

I'm know getting the CRD for $14,500 with 54k on her. I think its a great deal. I'll be leaving the throttle body and exhaust on the old Jeep as well as 4.10 gears. Everything else will be swapped over time. I will likely be selling the Excessive Amperage 225 alternator, or seeing if they can trade for a CRD version. Over time, I think I can get everything else to fit.

Will be selling the brand new in the box JBA shorty headers ceramic titanium coated, 5x 16" MOAB wheels with 245/75r16 tires and maybe some other small parts later.

The leftover will probably sell for $10k or so.

One more question, will the CRD front struts and rear springs/shocks fit on the Gasser? I know they are quite a bit stiffer, but I want to just take my lift off the current one and put it the new one. My current OME lift uses the 790 springs up front because of the ARB so I'm not worried about it on the CRD.
