I'm just wondering, the two times I have thrown the infamous 1261 I had just sprayed down the engine with a degreaser to make it pretty

So, what were you doing? It is my thought that blowing water up on top of the engine, even if warm or cold, somehow shorts or blows this component.

If anyone else would chime in, it may be illuminating for the whole group....

If memory serves, this is a glow plug code.
When I got it I had just started the jeep cold, moved it a few feet then turned it off. Next startup it had a code. Had you done the same thing in the course of washing the engine bay?

Yep, is was cold. And yes, P1261 is the #1 glow plug but several have reported the harness to be reversed. Though I still think it is a water thing too. Could be a cold thing. I dunno, that is why I threw our this post. I wanted to see if we could do something different to prevent it from happening to ourselves again. ORM and a few other trial-by-error analysis has led to this board solving some pretty irritating (and exspensive problems). I think we can come to a consensus on this one too.

So far:
1 wash
1 cold engine start/restart (I may throw my vote in this pile eventually.
