Posting a new topic from my previous overheating problem post.

05 CRD, 71K, AT that's been overheating going up long grades. Just tested my clutch fan by blocking radiator and covering up the front end with a moving blanket while in the sun, ambient temp was 80deg F and it's working fine, took almost 30 minutes to get it to 200deg while running the engine at 2400RPM so I don't think it is the thermostat either.

My question is could the tranny cause the overheating? And if so what would cause it to run so hot? Cooler is clean. Filter? Torque converter?

Here's my thought.

My 06 having a production date after 11/5 came with the same torque converter that was put into your apparently pre 11/05 crd.
Three weeks ago my torque converter was replaced by the dealer at 34,000 miles :shock: The transmission tech found torque converter clutch material in the oil pan of the transmission :dizzy: No supprise as the whole thing behind the f37 action was to make them last past the warranty period. Mine was covered by an extended warranty and I have the torque converter that should have been in there from the beginning.

I think a worn lockup clutch on your torque converter is slipping going up hill causing your over heating problems :grim:

If you have to pay I would get the Sun coast with better clutch material and the new springs. If you have any kind of warranty the Chrysler Euro version should be fine.

NOTE: looking at your mileage, 71,000 it appears yours is just past the 7/70 power train warranty the 05's had. Their plan worked :furious: See if you can find a sypathetic dealer. But you would need to be the first owner or the second owner and have paid to have the warranty transfered.

Mine toasted itself at about 60,000 miles, replaced under warranty. It got so hot that the steel on the torque converter blued, the transmission tech said he had never seen that. Never heard what was the cause.

Great :banghead: If it weren't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any at all. Does anyone have a link to where I can get a suncoast TC?

Get the Transgo kit too, it has the two repair valves for the front pump. If one of the two front pump valves goes bad, it will cause the lock up clutch to slip and after some more damage chadder. Your other choice is to replace the front pump but the Transgo kit that also has the shift valve seals and springs is cheaper than replacing the front pump just to fix a bad valve.

Have you taken it to a reputable Transmission shop. I'm actually a fan of dealerships (with caution) however, when they misdiagnosed my problem...well, let's just say I won't be going back Alexander Jeep in Franklin, TN.

Here's what happend to me recently:

Trans was overheating and going into limp mode. The dealer told me my torque converter was fine (and basically told me that doing research on the internet didn't mean squat - they are the dealership). And that was clearly not the problem but if i would pay 200 to upgrade the software, they could figure it out.

The problem clearly was the torque converter coming apart. The cooler lines were plugged which caused it to overheat. The tranny shop confirmed it.

Replaced with New Suncoast TC and Transgo Reprograming kit.

No issues since.

How many miles?? I've gotten the same anti internet BS from the dealer too. But finally I gave them some infrmation they didn't know about the torque converter and front pump/seal upgrade and I don't get it anymore and they are now listening :juggle:

Sorry JL. No offense but if there's two things I have lots of it's 'tude and bad luck.

Did some more research on this awesome forum and decided to do the flash update for the temperature gauges. Dealership charged me $45 but maybe that will iron some things out. I also added a tube of the Dr Trannys instant shudder fix stuff and ran home real hard (6 miles of 6% uphill grade) to try to duplicate the overheating but it never even got up to the half way mark! Tomorrow I'll have to hook up my boat to give it a real load test. As for the shudder... nothing.

83k miles....i guess people can't understand that their are intelligent people out there. kind of like using open source software...while i don't use it...a lot of it is really really good to use.

Okay got her fixed! Had the local dealer reflash the temperature gauges per GDE's instructions, added a tube of the Dr. Trannys instant shudder fix, and thanks to Sir Sam for explaining how all the emissions crap works I decided to unplug the MAF sensor and removed and cleaned the MAP sensor (which was almost completely clogged up). This morning I took my boat fishing and upon returning in 85deg heat towing at 70mph for 20 miles and then another 6 miles of 6% grade (very windy curvy) I had no tranny shudder or temperature problems. The highest the gauge went to was to maybe 220 deg. before the fan kicked on and dropped it back down.

Now I can let the wife have it back. :banghead:
